Racing Incident Report
DARPANA was slow to begin.
From outside barriers, CITY OF LIGHTS and HAPPY HOMING were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Near the 1000 Metres, QUANTUM POWER raced in restricted room between STORM UNICORN and CITY OF LIGHTS which shifted in.
Passing the 900 Metres, RED LUCKY STAR, which was proving difficult to settle, shifted out away from the heels of JADE PIPPO and in doing so made contact with EXPEDITE, taking that horse wider.
Making the first turn near the 700 Metres, JADE PIPPO got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of OCEAN WIDE.
Also near the 700 Metres, CITY OF LIGHTS got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of STORM UNICORN which shifted in when racing close to the heels of RED LUCKY STAR.
Near the 200 Metres, JADE PIPPO was shifted out when crowded for room between STORM UNICORN and RED LUCKY STAR, both of which shifted ground.
Throughout the race, EXPEDITE travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C K Tong stated that he had been asked to ride RED LUCKY STAR in 3rd or 4th position with cover if possible. He said in accordance with his instructions, he allowed RED LUCKY STAR to travel into a forward position and approaching the 1000 Metres he allowed JADE PIPPO to cross RED LUCKY STAR as he felt that that horse would continue on and race on the rail in the lead. He said however that JADE PIPPO remained racing in a one-off position in front of RED LUCKY STAR and then was steadied to allow HI MOLLY and OCEAN WIDE to clear that horse. He said this resulted in RED LUCKY STAR racing one position further back than had been intended. He said near the 900 Metres RED LUCKY STAR commenced to over-race and he shifted out away from behind JADE PIPPO to avoid striking the heels of that horse. He said RED LUCKY STAR continued to over-race and rounding the turn after the 700 Metres was taken very wide when JADE PIPPO hung out. He added the circumstances of tonight’s race in the early stages resulted in RED LUCKY STAR racing further back in the field than had been intended.
When questioned, K C Leung stated that he allowed JADE PIPPO to remain racing one horse off the fence rather than shifting in to the fence to ensure that it had the opportunity to shift out at the top of the Straight. He said as JADE PIPPO had lay out at its most recent start when he carried the whip in the right hand, tonight he carried the whip in the left hand to assist the horse in making the turns correctly. He said however that approaching the first turn when awkwardly placed close to the heels of OCEAN WIDE, JADE PIPPO got its head on the side and hung out badly. He said JADE PIPPO continued to hang out despite his efforts until straightening at which time the horse became balanced and raced more tractably. He added after the race he recommended to the connections that they consider altering the gear on JADE PIPPO in an attempt to have it corner better than it did tonight. A veterinary inspection of JAPE PIPPO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The racing manners and performance of JADE PIPPO were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, JADE PIPPO will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of O’HALO including an endoscopic examination immediately following the race showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, O’HALO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of RED LUCKY STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
O’HALO, EL GRANDE and HI MOLLY were sent for sampling.
<21/3/2013 Additional Veterinary Report>JADE PIPPO, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. JADE PIPPO was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P F Yiu this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right front leg with a superficial wound to the right front sesamoid. As previously advised, JADE PIPPO will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
