Race:1 (809) MEDIC KINGDOM HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1400 m

ONE STEP AHEAD was slow to begin.
BRAVERY AND POWER began only fairly and then from a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners.
Also from wide barriers, SPICY REALLY, AMAZING AGILITY and SPEEDY DRAGON were all steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, DIAMOND LEGEND failed to muster speed and approaching the 1000 Metres was left racing wide and without cover. DIAMOND LEGEND was then taken wider still passing the 800 Metres when SPICY REALLY shifted out away from the heels of ADONIS.
ADONIS was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Passing the 1100 Metres, ONE STEP AHEAD was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of WINNING CONTROLLER.
Also passing the 1100 Metres, SPICY REALLY was steadied away from the heels of ADONIS which was steadied to obtain cover behind ONE STEP AHEAD.
Near the 1050 Metres, AMAZING AGILITY received contact from SPEEDY DRAGON which improved into tight running inside DIAMOND LEGEND which was then shifted out to relieve the tightening to SPEEDY DRAGON and AMAZING AGILITY.
Passing the 400 Metres, TREASURE CHEST was steadied and shifted to the inside of CORRE RAPIDO and E GENERATION to obtain clear running when unable to improve outside CORRE RAPIDO where there was insufficient room.
Approaching the 300 Metres, KELMIMI WINS was checked when crowded for room between SHANGHAI DRAGON (A Hamelin) which, after being taken out marginally by CORRE RAPIDO, then shifted out away from that horse and WINNING CONTROLLER (B Shinn) which also shifted in marginally. Both A Hamelin and B Shinn were advised that the individual shifts from both SHANGHAI DRAGON and WINNING CONTROLLER were minimal and consequently did not constitute careless riding, however, they were told to ensure that they do what they can to prevent their mounts from shifting, even a minimal amount of ground.
Passing the 250 Metres, TREASURE CHEST raced in restricted room inside E GENERATION which shifted in marginally.
Approaching the 150 Metres, SHANGHAI DRAGON was steadied away from the heels of CORRE RAPIDO which shifted out marginally away from E GENERATION which also shifted marginally.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that ONE STEP AHEAD had sustained a laceration to the left hind fetlock.
A veterinary inspection of SHANGHAI DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of NITRO EXPRESS immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported.
KELMIMI WINS and ADONIS were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (810) VICTORY MARVEL HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

When being loaded into the barriers, HAPPY TIME became fractious, reared and backed out of the barriers prior to the back gates being secured. HAPPY TIME was examined by the Veterinary Officer and found to be suitable to race.
BRILLIANT was slow to begin.
HELAKU KNIGHT and LUCKY PUZZLE bumped heavily at the start, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.
WONDERFUL TIMES began only fairly.
ALL FOR ST PAUL’S began awkwardly.
From wide barriers, GLORIOUS BUDDY and PRECIOUS SWEETIE were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
On a number of occasions in the early stages, SIMPLY FLUKE got its head up when being steadied to obtain cover.
Near the 950 Metres, BRILLIANT momentarily raced tight inside WONDERFUL TIMES which got its head on the side and lay in away from SIMPLY FLUKE. After this, WONDERFUL TIMES continued to lay in away from SIMPLY FLUKE, resulting in its rider having to take measures to straighten his mount.
SIMPLY FLUKE lay out approaching and making the turn passing the 700 Metres.
After attempting to shift to the inside of REGENCY POET rounding the Home Turn, LUCKY PUZZLE was steadied when disappointed for running approaching the 400 Metres between REGENCY POET and HELAKU KNIGHT which improved to be racing outside the heels of HAPPY TIME which also shifted out. LUCKY PUZZLE then had difficulty obtaining clear running until after the 300 Metres.
Passing the 350 Metres, SIMPLY FLUKE became unbalanced when steadied away from the heels of BRILLIANT (K C Leung) which, when shifting to the outside of GREAT SON, was taken out marginally by that horse. K C Leung was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Close to the finishing line, HELAKU KNIGHT was shifted out away from the heels of MONKEY JEWELLERY.
When questioned, H N Wong stated that in pre-race discussions with the connections of GREAT SON, it was noted that there were a number of horses which race up on the speed and as GREAT SON is now in Class 4, it was felt that if GREAT SON were to be ridden to lead from the outside barrier, considerable use would have to be made of the horse in the early stages which would not afford it the opportunity to finish off the race. He said he was asked to ride GREAT SON positively and if, as anticipated, a number of horses were also ridden to take up a forward position, he should take a trailing position behind the leaders if possible. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode GREAT SON along in the early stages, however, REGENCY POET, which was drawn immediately inside GREAT SON, began better than his mount and was then ridden aggressively to take up a prominent position. He said as he anticipated that REGENCY POET would race outside MIGHTY VALOR, the anticipated leader of the race, he felt that he would shift across with REGENCY POET with a view to taking a trailing position behind that horse. He added after crossing into a one-off position near the 900 Metres, REGENCY POET then did not continue forward which resulted in GREAT SON being unable to obtain a trailing position behind that horse and being left racing three wide and without cover. He said he did give consideration to then allowing his mount to improve to be racing forward of REGENCY POET, however, he did not believe this would be in the best interests of the horse given that he had ridden it along in the early stages and therefore GREAT SON remained racing wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.
A veterinary inspection of SIMPLY FLUKE, WONDERFUL TIMES and ALL FOR ST PAUL’S immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MIGHTY VALOR, VIGOR CHAMP and MONKEY JEWELLERY were sent for sampling.

After this, SPICY GRILL, from a wide barrier, was shifted across behind runners.
SOLAR POWER bumped the outside of its barrier on jumping and lost ground.
From the outside barriers, PRIME TIME and MY WINNER were shifted across behind runners in the early stages
Approaching the 1200 Metres, LEADING FORTUNE was steadied away from the heels of MIGHTY POWER which was taken in by SMART WONGCHOY (C Schofield) which shifted in when not properly clear. C Schofield was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he shows far more care in similar circumstances.

MIGHTY POWER was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Near the 150 Metres, CIRCUIT HASSLER and LEADING FORTUNE raced tight.

From the outside barriers, PRECIOUSSHIP and HELENE LEADINGSTAR were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After initially being steadied to obtain cover, NORTHERN SUPERSTAR travelled keenly passing the 1400 Metres when attempting to shift in further behind FAST MOST FURIOUS. As a result of HELENE LEADINGSTAR improving its position inside NORTHERN SUPERSTAR near the 1300 Metres, this resulted in NORTHERN SUPERSTAR being left racing wide and without cover near the 1200 Metres. NORTHERN SUPERSTAR was then allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead near the 1000 Metres.
Approaching the 1200 Metres, HELENE LEADINGSTAR commenced to travel very keenly and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of FAST MOST FURIOUS.
SAVVY NINE had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.

Despite being vigorously ridden for some distance in the early stages, MISTER MONTE was slow to muster speed.
Passing the 800 Metres, LET’S TAKE IT EASY was momentarily crowded for room inside REYNOLDS which got its head on the side and lay in before being shifted out to relieve the tightening to LET’S TAKE IT EASY. After this, REYNOLDS was left racing wide and without cover.
After the 700 Metres, DRAGON COMMANDER was left racing wide and without cover and near the 650 Metres was bumped on the hindquarters by NATURAL STORM. At the entrance to the Straight, DRAGON COMMANDER, which was giving ground, momentarily raced tight between GOOD DAYS and MANAGEMENT STAR which shifted out. After this, DRAGON COMMANDER gave ground and finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of DRAGON COMMANDER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of DRAGON COMMANDER was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DRAGON COMMANDER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the 400 Metres, JIMMU and MANAGEMENT STAR bumped.
CHEERFUL STAR was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and after the 200 Metres was awkwardly placed behind CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE which was giving ground. CHEERFUL STAR was then shifted to the outside of CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE near the 150 Metres.
Near the 250 Metres, KUNGFUMASTER PANDA was shifted to the outside of LET’S TAKE ITT EASY after being disappointed for running between that horse and MCMUNIGAL which was giving ground.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE, K Teetan stated that, in his opinion, the horse finished off its races best when able to obtain cover as was the case at its most recent start when it finished second. He said in today’s race, from a wide barrier, he shifted CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE across with runners to its inside with a view to obtaining a trialing position as it was felt that MISTER MONTE as well as a number of horses drawn inside CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE would be ridden to take up a forward position. He said after shifting across with FAMILY LEADER in the early stages, CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE travelled too keenly and he was unable to restrain the horse to obtain cover. He said CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE continued to travel keenly along the Back Straight and when it became apparent to him that he would not be able to obtain cover, he elected to press forward on CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE into the lead. He added CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE came under pressure prior to the 500 Metres and then in the Straight gave ground. He said the performance of CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE today, in his opinion, confirmed that the horse is better suited when ridden with cover, however, he added that the manner in which CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE had travelled keenly in the early and middle stages also provided another reason for the horse not finishing off the race. A veterinary inspection of CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MCMUNIGAL, M F Poon stated that the horse was able to obtain a forward position in the early stages in accordance with its normal racing pattern. He said MCMUNIGAL travelled satisfactorily until being placed under pressure passing the 600 Metres. He said MCMUNIGAL immediately came under heavy pressure and did not respond to his riding. He said in the Straight MCMUNIGAL shortened stride noticeably and did not finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of MCMUNIGAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MCMUNIGAL, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MCMUNIGAL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CHEERFUL STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE, NATURAL STORM and MANAGEMENT STAR were sent for sampling.

Near the 950 Metres, SKY FIELD was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOLDEN LINK which was eased out away from the heels of THE ABRAXAS.
Rounding the Home Turn, GOLDEN LINK lay in under pressure and passing the 400 Metres hung in badly behind TELECOM MISSILE and was consequently checked away from the heels of that horse passing the 300 Metres. After this, GOLDEN LINK continued to hang in and proved difficult to ride, requiring its rider, Z Purton, to stop riding and straighten his mount near the 150 Metres to prevent GOLDEN LINK from shifting in and causing interference to TELECOM MISSILE. After clearing TELECOM MISSILE, GOLDEN LINK continued to hang in. Due to GOLDEN LINK’s racing manners, the horse was not able to be properly tested. The racing manners of GOLDEN LINK were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN LINK will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
Near the 200 Metres, REWARDING TOGETHER was disappointed for running between GOLDEN LINK and CLASSIC POSH which shifted to the inside of HARD PROMISE as that horse commenced to give ground.

As the start was effected, APOLAR WARRIOR lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently began very awkwardly. APOLAR WARRIOR then shifted out abruptly, resulting in its rider, K C Leung, being dislodged. Having regard to the manner in which APOLAR WARRIOR began, the Stewards ruled that that horse must undertake a satisfactory stalls test before being allowed to race again. K C Leung was subsequently examined by the Chief Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagements.

From the outside barrier, SUPER ELEGANCE was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
In the early stages, DECISIVE ACTION was left racing very wide and without cover and after the 900 Metres was allowed to improve its position. Then at the 850 Metres, DECISIVE ACTION jumped a shadow on the track, became badly unbalanced and lost ground. Throughout the race, EVER LAUGH travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PRECISE EXPRESS, M Chadwick stated that it was intended for the horse to be ridden more forward than it was last start due to being drawn barrier 1. He said on jumping PRECISE EXPRESS got its head up and began only fairly and for this reason he had to ride his mount along in the early stages and was able to obtain a midfield position inside THE ROCK. He said the tempo of the race was quick in the early and middle stages and PRECIOUS EXPRESS, in his opinion, did not seem to be comfortable with the strong tempo of the race. He said PRECISE EXPRESS was always off the bridle and came under pressure prior to the 600 Metres. He added PRECISE EXPRESS was not able to quicken with MR ALDAN, the eventual winner, in the early part of the Straight and after coming under heavy pressure after the 400 Metres then gave ground over the concluding stages. He said in addition to the race being run at a good tempo, he was also of the opinion that PRECISE EXPRESS may not have backed up from its last start success eleven days ago given that today was only the horse’s fifth race start in Hong Kong. A veterinary inspection of PRECISE EXPRESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of PRECISE EXPRESS, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PRECISE EXPRESS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of RACING LUCK immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of SUPER ELEGANCE immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER ELEGANCE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg and have a restricted action all round. As previously advised, PRECISE EXPRESS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.

YOUNG LEGEND began awkwardly and then was checked away from the heels of BEAUTY APPLAUSE which shifted out abruptly.
From the outside barrier, TRANSCENDENT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After originally attempting to obtain cover passing the 1200 Metres, YOUNG LEGEND was left racing wide and without cover near the 1100 Metres and was then allowed to improve its position passing the 1000 Metres to race outside the lead.
Passing the 550 Metres, FANTASY was steadied away from the heels of SUPER OASIS which shifted to the outside of BEAUTY RUSH as AMAZING CHOCOLATE improved quickly around FANTASY.
DRAGON GENERAL had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
When questioned regarding the performance of AMAZING CHOCOLATE, K Teetan stated that, from a wide barrier, he was able to shift AMAZING CHOCOLATE across behind runners in the early stages and obtain a good trailing position three wide but with cover behind FANTASY. He said passing the 1000 Metres FANTASY lost ground which resulted in AMAZING CHOCOLATE having to be checked out away from the heels of that horse. He said this resulted in AMAZING CHOCOLATE commencing to travel keenly and improving to be racing outside the heels of FANTASY. He said when this happened TRANSCENDENT was able to improve its position inside AMAZING CHOCOLATE which then resulted in his mount being left racing four wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. He added AMAZING CHOCOLATE quickened satisfactorily rounding the Home Turn, however, after coming under pressure passing the 300 Metres then weakened over the concluding stages which he attributed solely to having to race very wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of AMAZING CHOCOLATE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, H T Mo reported that FANTASY made an abnormal breathing noise throughout the race. A veterinary inspection of FANTASY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Near the 250 Metres, HEZA BEAUTY was shifted out away from the heels of STANLEY PARK to continue improving. KASI FARASI, which was racing outside HEZA BEAUTY, was shifted out away from the heels of that horse in consequence. When KASI FARASI was shifted out, ULTIMATE GLORY was then directed to the outside of LOBO’S LEGEND when unable to continue improving between LOBO’S LEGEND and KASI FARASI.
When questioned regarding CRAIG’S STAR being ridden back in the field from barrier 13, Mr C S Shum, the trainer of the horse, stated that he received a request from the owners of CRAIG’S STAR for the horse to be ridden quietly as it was felt that CRAIG’S STAR weakened over the concluding stages last start when ridden in a forward position from a more favourable barrier. He said the owners were of the view that too much use would have to be made of the horse from the wide barrier and therefore it may again be unable to finish off the race. Mr Shum stated that having considered that a number of horses had been able to race well today when ridden from off the speed, he agreed with the request from the owners and accordingly instructed M Chadwick, the rider of the horse, to shift CRAIG’S STAR across behind runners in the early stages. He said he also instructed Jockey Chadwick to bring the horse to the outside if at all possible as he felt that this would provide CRAIG’S STAR with the best opportunity to finish off the race. He added whilst he was disappointed with the circumstances of the race which resulted in CRAIG’S STAR not being able to get to the outside, he was nonetheless satisfied with the way that CRAIG’S STAR finished off the race over the concluding stages when ridden more quietly.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that MERRYGOWIN was lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MERRYGOWIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of AWE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
HEZA BEAUTY, PRIVATE ROCKET and ALCARI were sent for sampling.

FIRST RESPONDER and TRUST ME bumped at the start.
MOERAKI shifted out on jumping and made contact with the hindquarters of EXCEPTIONAL NICE.
CRUISING lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and bumped the inside of its gate, resulting in the horse beginning only fairly. CRUISING was then ridden along in the early stages to obtain a forward position.
Approaching the 1100 Metres, PRESIDENT’S CHOICE momentarily raced tight inside KEEP YOU WARM which was then directed back out to relieve the tightening to PRESIDENT’S CHOICE.
Passing the 1000 Metres, DAY DAY RICH raced tight inside CRUISING (Apprentice C L Chau) which, after being directed in at an acute angle, then shifted in further after being straightened. Apprentice Chau was warned against the practice of directing his mounts to shift in at such an acute angle.
Near the 750 Metres, WINNING BREW got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed behind PRESIDENT’S CHOICE.
Passing the 700 Metres, MOERAKI got its head up when awkwardly placed behind EXCEPTIONAL NICE. After this, MOERAKI raced keenly and continued to race close to the heels of EXCEPTIONAL NICE.
WINNING BREW was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and near the 300 Metres was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CRUISING.
After the 300 Metres, WINNING BREW lay out, resulting in its rider, Z Purton, momentarily dropping his left rein near the 200 Metres.
H T Mo (KEEP YOU WARM) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 250 Metres he directed his mount out when not clear of PRESIDENT’S CHOICE, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. H T Mo was suspended from riding in races for the first Happy Valley racemeeting to be conducted during the 2020/2021 racing season on Wednesday, 9 September 2020. In addition, Jockey Mo was fined the sum of $15,000 in lieu of a period of suspension incorporating one racemeeting.
Near the 100 Metres, QUADRUPLE DOUBLE was steadied away from the heels of SMART LEADER (K Teetan) which shifted out. K Teetan was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Apprentice C L Chau (CRUISING) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of FIRST RESPONDER, resulting in that horse being unnecessarily crowded for room and losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for Apprentice Chau to be fined the sum of $30,000 in lieu of a period of suspension incorporating two racemeetings.
Throughout the race, FIRST RESPONDER travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, K Teetan stated that he was instructed to ride SMART LEADER in a position forward of midfield if possible, however, not to ride his mount too aggressively to do so. He said in the early stages he was able to obtain a position inside PRESIDENT’S CHOICE and had hoped to be able to improve to be racing inside KEEP YOU WARM, however, in order to obtain this position, he would have had to ride SMART LEADER hard and therefore he elected to take a trailing position behind KEEP YOU WARM rather than attempt to improve to be racing inside that horse. He said this resulted in SMART LEADER being slightly further back in the field than had been intended. He said SMART LEADER then lost ground in the middle stages when KEEP YOU WARM was taken back by METRO WARRIOR as a result of METRO WARRIOR being steadied to obtain cover behind GOOD LUCK FRIEND.
A veterinary inspection of QUADRUPLE DOUBLE, PRESIDENT’S CHOICE and FIRST RESPONDER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of TOTAL EXCESS immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, TOTAL EXCESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
WINNING BREW, GOOD LUCK FRIEND and SMART LEADER were sent for sampling.
