After this, WINWIN THIRTYTHREE and JUBILATION were shifted across behind runners from wide barriers.
WAH MAY LUCK began awkwardly and shortly after the start shifted in and inconvenienced INCREDIBLE.
H W Lai (MOON PEAKS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 1400 Metres he directed his mount in at such an angle that that horse was not able to be corrected in a timely manner which resulted in MOON PEAKS shifting in passing the 1400 Metres and causing WAH MAY LUCK to be taken in onto INCREDIBLE, resulting in INCREDIBLE, which was hampered, shifting in across the rightful running of SEIZE THE SPIRIT which was checked and lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled. In the circumstances, H W Lai was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 18 May 2022 and to expire on Monday, 23 May 2022 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).
Near the 800 Metres, WAH MAY LUCK was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MISTER MONTE when being crossed by that horse.

Near the 150 Metres, FLASH FAMOUS improved into tight running between WAH MAY LUCK and INCREDIBLE.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SEIZE THE SPIRIT, Z Purton stated that after meeting interference near the 1400 Metres, SEIZE THE SPIRIT did not travel well and he had to ask his mount in the middle stages to maintain its position. He said after the 600 Metres he placed SEIZE THE SPIRIT under heavy pressure to improve, however, the horse did not quicken and after being placed under heavy pressure in the early part of the Straight the horse’s action deteriorated and SEIZE THE SPIRIT commenced to give ground passing the 200 Metres. He added that because he was concerned with the manner in which SEIZE THE SPIRIT shortened stride, he eased the horse down over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of SEIZE THE SPIRIT immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer”. The performance of SEIZE THE SPIRIT, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SEIZE THE SPIRIT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

When questioned, Z Purton stated that as IMA SINGLE MAN did not feel completely comfortable in its action when proceeding to the Start, he trotted the horse up behind the barriers in front of the Veterinary Officer to confirm IMA SINGLE MAN’s suitability to race. He said as he was not able to detect any obvious soreness or lameness with IMA SINGLE MAN and as the Veterinary Officer was similarly not able to identify any issues with IMA SINGLE MAN, he was comfortable for IMA SINGLE MAN to race today. He added that IMA SINGLE MAN showed good early speed out of the barriers and was able to take up a forward position behind the leaders without being ridden along which indicated to him that the horse was free in its action. He said IMA SINGLE MAN continued to travel well until near the 500 Metres at which time the pressure of the race increased. He said as soon as the tempo quickened, IMA SINGLE MAN immediately came off the bridle and despite being ridden along rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight commenced to give ground. He further stated that he continued to ride IMA SINGLE MAN along until near the 200 Metres and as IMA SINGLE MAN had given ground to be placed at the rear of the field, he did not persist in riding it out over the concluding stages. Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of IMA SINGLE MAN, said that he was unable to explain the horse’s failure to finish the race off. He said there was nothing in the horse’s work leading up to today’s race which indicated that it would not perform well. He added that at this early stage the only reason he could find for the disappointing performance was that IMA SINGLE MAN travelled somewhat keenly in the middle stages and that the horse may have come to the end of its preparation. He said he would monitor the horse in the days subsequent to today’s race with a view to deciding on its immediate preparation. A veterinary inspection of IMA SINGLE MAN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of IMA SINGLE MAN, favourite for today’s race and which finished at the rear of the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, IMA SINGLE MAN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
IMA SINGLE MAN, GOOD LUCK FRIEND and THE GOLDEN SCENERY were sent for sampling.

RIGHT AS RAIN then continued to race close to the heels of DAILY CHARM until passing the 350 Metres.
For some distance after the 400 Metres, EEVEE raced tight when attempting to improve into restricted running inside PAKISTAN FRIEND which, after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of SHANGHAI DRAGON rounding the Home Turn, then shifted in marginally. This resulted in EEVEE being steadied near the 350 Metres when initially disappointed for running inside PAKISTAN FRIEND. Then approaching the 200 Metres, EEVEE was momentarily steadied when improving into tight running between SHANGHAI DRAGON which was giving ground and PAKISTAN FRIEND which shifted in marginally.
J Moreira (RED ELYSEES) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of RIGHT AS RAIN, resulting in that horse being checked and losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled. J Moreira was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday 15 May 2022 and to expire on Thursday, 19 May 2022 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Moreira’s good race riding record.
After the race, M F Poon stated that as the start was effected SHANGHAI DRAGON reared which resulted in the horse beginning only fairly. He said he then rode his mount along in the early stages in an attempt to make up lost ground which resulted in him having to make some use of the horse. He said after obtaining the lead near the 1600 Metres SHANGHAI DRAGON travelled only fairly and then after coming under pressure rounding the Home Turn did not finish the race off. He added that, in his opinion, today’s disappointing performance was attributable to the manner in which the horse began. A veterinary inspection of SHANGHAI DRAGON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of JOYFUL HEART immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
RIGHT AS RAIN, RED ELYSEES and BORN THE SAME DAY were sent for sampling.

He said when KA YING EXCELLENT and THE ANOMALY took some time to muster speed, this resulted in SUPER DYNAMITE being left racing wide and without cover after the 1200 Metres and therefore he allowed his mount to improve forward of KA YING EXCELLENT rather than continuing to race unnecessarily wide.
