On jumping, SUPREME COMMANDER, which was being taken back, got its head up. MAGIC J was slow into stride. In the early stages, after being taken back, SICHUAN HERO raced keenly. J Lloyd (SPIRIT OF LO PAN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of SUPER BOBO which as a result was carried in across the rightful running of MAJESTIC HEART which was checked. ROCKET AND GOLD and SUPREME COMMANDER, which were following, were checked in consequence and ELECTRONIC MASTER and MAGIC J were hampered. J Lloyd was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 2 July 2009 on which day he may resume race riding (1 Hong Kong raceday). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday 28 June 2009. In addition, J Lloyd was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating two further racedays. Near the 500 Metres, CONNOISSEUR’S LOVE got its head on the side and hung in. At the 400 Metres, MAGIC J was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of WONG’S FAVOURITE which shifted in after getting its head on the side and commencing to hang. He said SPIRIT OF LO PAN today raced “flat” throughout and did not travel at any stage. Trainer Y S Tsui advised the Stewards that it is not his intention to race SPIRIT OF LO PAN again this season. Acting on this advice, the Stewards decided no action ought to be taken. SPIRIT OF LO PAN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPIRIT OF LO PAN after the race did not show any significant findings. MAJESTIC HEART and SUPER BOBO were sent for sampling.

When questioned regarding the poor performance of SECRET OF WINNING, W C Marwing said he had been advised the horse had disappointed when being ridden in a forward position at its two previous race starts. He said whilst it is known SECRET OF WINNING shows good natural early speed, he was asked to ensure to obtain a position with cover in the hope of having the horse relaxed so it would finish the race off. He said SECRET OF WINNING began well and immediately commenced to prove difficult to settle as he endeavoured to obtain a position with cover. He said SECRET OF WINNING did not relax in the first 400 Metres and as a consequence failed to finish the race off. He said in his opinion SECRET OF WINNING is still immature and will benefit from racing. When questioned regarding the poor performance of WASABISABI, Apprentice M Chadwick said his mount obtained a forward position as intended. He said WASABISABI travelled only fairly throughout the run, however, failed to quicken when placed under pressure. He was not able to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. WASABISABI was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. SUCCESSFUL ERA was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WASABISABI and SUCCESSFUL ERA after the race did not show any significant findings. SAPELLI and FAIR NAVIGATOR were sent for sampling. Shortly after straightening, GALLANT MASTER was steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running and then after the 200 Metres was again steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between LUCKY MONEY STAR and BEST NOODLE. When GALLANT MASTER shifted out, FUJIAN PRINCE and TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND were carried wider. At the 150 Metres, Apprentice M Chadwick (BEST NOODLE) dropped his right rein. Throughout the race, LUCKY MONEY STAR travelled wide and without cover. The performance of I KNOW I CAN, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, I KNOW I CAN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. J Winks (OLYMPICSHIP) said he had been instructed to ride his mount in front or at least in a forward position as is usual. He said OLYMPICSHIP appeared upset behind the barriers, then began only fairly and in the early stages was reluctant to stride out. He said making the first turn after being ridden with the whip for a short distance, OLYMPICSHIP made ground to join the tail enders of the field and travelled satisfactorily for a short distance. He said OLYMPICSHIP again came under pressure after entering the Back Straight and did not respond to his riding. He said after making the Home Turn he became concerned with the manner in which OLYMPICSHIP was travelling and because of this he eased his mount out of the race near the 200 Metres. He said the work of OLYMPICSHIP in the lead up to today’s race was good and because of this he believed the horse was a strong chance in today’s race. OLYMPICSHIP was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, OLYMPICSHIP was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was distressed. Before being allowed to race again, OLYMPICSHIP will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WIN MORE and BEST NOODLE were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (698) UNIVERSITY HALL ALUMNI HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1400 m

At declaration time, C K Tong was declared as the rider of both WINNING PAL and SPARKLING. It was established that C K Tong had a firm commitment to ride WINNING PAL. As such, the Stewards permitted K T Yeung to be substituted as the rider of SPARKLING. For this declaration error, C K Tong was fined $2,000. ANIMATION was withdrawn on 19.6.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GOOD TIME CHARLIE (W M Lai). Before being allowed to race again, ANIMATION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Prior to leaving the saddling stalls, GOSHAWK had its left front foot replated. GOSHAWK was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Near the 1200 Metres, when racing wide on the track, KING OF HEARTS was steadied in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover and then commenced to over-race. At the 150 Metres, AMBITIOUS OWNER, which got its head on the side, shifted in and brushed SEIZE THE DAY. For the majority of the race, GOOD TIME CHARLIE and BRAVE SPIRIT travelled wide and without cover. W C Marwing (MY WAY) explained the intention had been to have the horse travel in midfield if possible. He said MY WAY began only fairly and shortly afterwards bumped with SURE GOOD. He said as a consequence MY WAY became unbalanced and lost ground. He said near the 1300 Metres he elected to steady MY WAY to shift in across the heels of WINNING PAL to avoid travelling wide. He said after this MY WAY travelled only fairly in the run, however, did close the race off strongly. When questioned, K T Yeung (SPARKLING) said he was advised the horse disappointed at its last start when leading carrying blinkers. He said after that performance the blinkers were removed from SPARKLING and he was today asked to position the horse in midfield if possible. He said in the early stages after beginning well he did not ride his mount along as he believed it would show sufficient natural speed to obtain a midfield position. He said approaching the 1200 Metres SURE GOOD which was travelling outside him was being ridden along to go forward and he elected to allow that horse to go forward and cross, as a consequence SPARKLING travelled further back than intended. He said in the middle stages SPARKLING travelled a little keenly, however, after being ridden more quietly in the early stages closed the race off strongly. Mr C W Chang, the trainer of BE MY SONG, explained the horse when having its two starts since joining his stable travelled keenly when wearing blinkers over distances of less than the 1400 Metres of today. He said as a consequence BE MY SONG had failed to finish its races off. He said due to BE MY SONG stepping up in distance today, he decided to remove the blinkers from the horse and asked S K Sit to ride BE MY SONG more quietly in an endeavour to have the horse close the race off. He said today BE MY SONG in his opinion travelled a little keenly in the early stages when being taken back to a position with cover and again did not finish the race off as he had hoped. SURE GOOD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SURE GOOD after the race did not show any significant findings. AMBITIOUS OWNER and BRAVE SPIRIT were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (699) THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1650 m

When the gates opened, NEEDLES AND THREAD lifted its front feet off the ground and as a consequence was slow to begin. KENOBE was slow into stride. DYNAMIC began awkwardly and blundered. GOLDEN TREASURE began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall, then making the first turn when being held wide by SUPER CAGA was steadied. GOLDEN TREASURE then commenced to hang out. After entering the Back Straight, PRETTY TOUCH hung in. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, KENOBE, which was racing tight inside AMPLE GAINS, was steadied away from the heels of VICTORY TREASURE which got its head on the side, shifted in and bumped the running rail. After the 500 Metres and again at the 400 Metres, STILTON was bumped and carried wider by AMPLE GAINS which was shifting out to find clear running. For a considerable distance after the 200 Metres, NEEDLES AND THREAD and KENOBE were held up and unable to improve inside SUPER CAGA which was giving ground. In the Straight, VICTORY TREASURE hung in. When questioned, K T Yeung (SUPER CAGA) explained he had been instructed to lead, the same as when the horse was successful at its most recent race start. He said SUPER CAGA began only fairly, however, did not show natural speed and because of this he rode his mount along in an endeavour to cross runners drawn to his inside. He said making the first turn SUPER CAGA hung out and because of this continued to race wide on the track. He said after the 1200 Metres he allowed SUPER CAGA to continue forward, initially to cross to race outside MIGHTY SUN, then after the 1000 Metres rode his mount along to go forward, cleared MIGHTY SUN and crossed to the rail. He said after this he steadied the tempo on SUPER CAGA. He said when placed under pressure in the Straight SUPER CAGA did not respond to his riding. K T Yeung was told his riding in the early stages and until the 800 Metres in the opinion of the Stewards lacked judgement given the amount of use he made of his mount. He was further told in similar circumstances regardless of the instructions he has been issued, he would be expected to use initiative. NEEDLES AND THREAD was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of NEEDLES AND THREAD after the race did not show any significant findings. STILTON was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, STILTON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. At the 600 Metres, CANNONISE was carried wider by DYNAMIC BLITZ which shifted out from behind WARRIOR. Prior to straightening, BEAR MACHO was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running. Shortly after straightening, ROYAL PERICLES was steadied and shifted to the outside of CANNONISE to go forward, then at the 200 Metres was again steadied away from the heels of CANNONISE which had its head on the side and shifted out while hanging. Throughout the race, HONG KONG SUPERSTAR hung out and travelled wide and without cover. K T Yeung (SEA TREASURE) was severely reprimanded for failing to ride his mount out over the final 200 Metres of the race. When questioned regarding the performance of WARRIOR, M Du Plessis said he went forward on his mount in the early stages as instructed. He said while he had to make some use of his mount in the first 200 Metres to obtain the lead, he then endeavoured to steady his mount. He said WARRIOR travelled comfortably for a short distance, however, making the turn out of the Back Straight he felt the horse was not travelling as it should. He said WARRIOR maintained its position in the lead to the inside of TCHAIKOVSKY entering the Home Straight. He said shortly afterwards he placed WARRIOR under pressure, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and commenced to give ground. He said near the 200 Metres he used the whip on WARRIOR to ensure the horse was giving its best and when there was no response, he over the final 100 Metres eased his mount down as he felt something might have been amiss with it. WARRIOR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, WARRIOR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. In the circumstances, the performance of WARRIOR was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WARRIOR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOUF, which was fractious in its stall, was slow to begin. W M Lai (ACE OF SPADES) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 1000 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in, causing OUR PEGASUS to be carried in which in turn caused VALUE CHOICE to be carried in, causing crowding on its inside to SOVIET PEARL which as a result was carried in across the rightful running of COUNTRY MAGIC, causing that horse to be checked and blunder. GOUF, which was following, was checked in consequence. Having in mind that this was the 6th occasion on which W M Lai had been found to be in breach of the careless riding Rule during the season, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was that he be fined a sum of $80,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating four racedays. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, GOUF was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of COUNTRY MAGIC. Before being allowed to race again, HIGH MARK, LEO’S PRIDE and MASTER CRISTO will all be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. While the Stewards were satisfied the riding of Z Purton (CIRCUIT HERO), 5th placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse's finishing position, he nonetheless was reminded of his responsibility to ensure he rides his mounts out right to the end of the race where circumstances permit. Race:10 (703) HKU JOCKEY CLUB BUILDING FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 2 1400 m

UNION'S STAR was withdrawn on 19.6.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HORACE'S CHOICE (C K Tong). Before being allowed to race again, UNION’S STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TOP NEWS proved difficult to load. In view of the record of TOP NEWS, the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again. TOP NEWS was slow to begin. FLEET COMMAND was slow to begin, then lost further ground when crowded for room between LAMBRO and HIGH POINT, both of which shifted ground. Near the 1200 Metres, LUMINOUS, which had been ridden to go forward, was steadied and shifted across to a position with cover. After the 1200 Metres, TOP NEWS got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LUMINOUS (M W Leung) which shifted in when not properly clear. M W Leung was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Passing the 1000 Metres, after being shifted across to a position with cover, FORTUNE RED PEPPER got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GOLD STRIKER. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, FORTUNE RED PEPPER again got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GOLD STRIKER. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, LAMBRO was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of GOLD STRIKER. Prior to straightening, FORTUNE RED PEPPER was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running. When questioned, D Beadman (IRISH JIG) explained he had been instructed to ride his mount where it was comfortable. He said IRISH JIG began well, he therefore elected to allow his mount to travel forward in the early stages without riding along to do so. He said approaching the 1000 Metres he went forward to cross GOLD STRIKER to avoid being forced to race wide. He said as he did this HORACE'S CHOICE went forward with him which required him to make more use of his mount than he would have liked to cross that runner to lead on the rail. He said after reaching the lead he steadied the tempo on IRISH JIG. He said IRISH JIG in the early part of the Straight responded to his riding, however, over the final 150 Metres gave ground. He said it was not the pre-race plan to lead on IRISH JIG and the circumstances of the race required him to make more use of his mount in the early stages than he would have liked to avoid being left racing wide. C K Tong (HORACE’S CHOICE) said he was instructed to allow his mount to travel where it was comfortable which was anticipated to be about midfield. He said HORACE’S CHOICE began well and he did not push his mount to obtain a forward position. He said HORACE'S CHOICE continued to travel on the bridle in the early stages and as a consequence was positioned further forward than anticipated behind the leaders. When questioned regarding the poor performance of LAMBRO, Z Purton said his mount was not suited by the solid early tempo of the race as it was off the bridle throughout. He said in his opinion LAMBRO is better suited when able to travel which enables it to finish its races off. He said in the Straight today when placed under pressure LAMBRO did not respond in the manner in which it had in the past and over the concluding stages when tiring felt unbalanced in its action. LAMBRO and GREAT GUY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LAMBRO and GREAT GUY after the race did not show any significant findings. FAIR TRADE and FLEET COMMAND were sent for sampling.
