Racing Incident Report

SLOTOP, which was difficult in the pre-race parade, broke loose as it was about to go onto the track. After being caught, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said that it had sustained superficial wounds to the back of its knee, but after he discussed the horse's condition with Trainer G Lane and with rider, C Williams, he decided that SLOTOP was suitable to race. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred as the Stewards were of the opinion an incident had occurred in the Straight which may have had a bearing on the result. After viewing the available films, the Stewards decided it was inappropriate on this occasion to proceed with a formal objection hearing. Weighed-in was then semaphored. About the 300 Metres, INDUSTRIAL PIONEER was checked rather severely when disappointed for running on the inside of SLOTOP which when weakening shifted in slightly away from HIGH SPIRITS. After being checked, SLOTOP was shifted out which allowed INDUSTRIAL PIONEER clear running, but then near the winning post the horse was shifted out to continue going forward. MIGHTY DRAGON was slowly away. In the early stages, TRIUMPHANT FEELING proved difficult to settle when racing wide and without any cover. Also in the early stages, the off side stirrup leather of TEQUILA POP (Apprentice Y T Cheng) loosened. Apprentice Y T Cheng spent some time in the early stages adjusting the leather. About the 1200 Metres, MY HEART was unbalanced when racing tight between INDUSTRIAL PIONEER and MONARDS which itself was racing tight inside TRIUMPHANT FEELING. Near the 800 Metres, MY HEART was steadied when unable to hold its position between INDUSTRIAL PIONEER and MONARDS. In the Straight, DOLLARS AND SENSE hung in and just after the 400 Metres brushed the hindquarters of MONARDS, then after this made contact with MIGHTY DRAGON whilst continuing to hang in. Throughout the race, JOKER, which was drawn a difficult gate, was obliged to travel wide and without any cover. G Mossé (INDUSTRIAL PIONEER) was questioned regarding a comment the Stewards considered he had made to Assistant Trainer Dennis Yip during a conversation in the Weighing Room after the race. The Stewards were of a prima facie view that G Mossé had made comments during the conversation that could have been detrimental to the interests of racing in Hong Kong. G Mossé assured the Stewards that conversation had in no way been intended to be critical of racing or its control in Hong Kong. The Stewards decided that the explanation submitted by G Mossé be accepted.
