Racing Incident Report

Whilst being saddled, REFRESHINGLY kicked out and made contact with a wall. Because of this, the near side hind plate fitted to the horse spread. This was replaced. REFRESHINGLY was trotted up, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who discussed the matter with the Trainer and it was then decided REFRESHINGLY was suitable to race. On the way to the Start, A Starke was dislodged from HOLY RANTO. HOLY RANTO proceeded riderless to the starting point where it was caught. A Starke was examined by the medical officer and passed fit to ride. HOLY RANTO was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the Start who discussed the situation with A Starke and it was then decided HOLY RANTO was suitable to race. ALLEZ ALLEZ was slowly away. HOLY RANTO jumped awkwardly with its head up. About the 1000 Metres, CULLINAN was steadied when disappointed for running between ABSOLUTE and ENERGETIC PRINCE which made the turn awkwardly and shifted out slightly. Near the 500 Metres, REFRESHINGLY brushed the running rail, shifted some ground, then made contact with SAI KUNG STAR. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, HOLY RANTO hung out. ABSOLUTE made the Home Turn awkwardly with its head up and shifted ground. Just after straightening, CULLINAN was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of SAI KUNG STAR and attempt to improve between SAI KUNG STAR and POT BLACK. About the 200 Metres, SAI KUNG STAR, which at this stage was giving ground, was steadied when crowded between CULLINAN and SIGHT FIRST which shifted to the outside of REFRESHINGLY which also shifted out slightly. Because of all the circumstances involved, no action was taken. In the Straight, AMERICAN WIN hung in. When questioned, Apprentice Y T Cheng (REFRESHINGLY) said he had been instructed to ride the horse somewhere just behind the speed if possible. He said REFRESHINGLY left the gates well and running to the first turn he maintained his position inside SAI KUNG STAR and anticipated it would cross him and lead which would allow him to take cover behind that horse. However, REFRESHINGLY proved strong for him and SAI KUNG STAR did not go forward, he was unable to restrain REFRESHINGLY back and accordingly the horse raced keenly inside SAI KUNG STAR throughout. Mr D A Hayes, Trainer of REFRESHINGLY, confirmed that he had instructed Apprentice Cheng to ride this horse somewhere away from the lead and expressed some disappointment with the manner in which the horse was ridden in the early stages which had clearly contributed to the horse proving difficult to restrain back behind SAI KUNG STAR. The explanations tendered by Mr Hayes and Apprentice Cheng were accepted, however, Apprentice Cheng was told his ride on the horse tonight had not been one of his better rides and he should always endeavour to ride in a manner which leaves no room at all for query and should at all times bear in mind the importance of carrying out instructions. REFRESHINGLY was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, it was noted SIGHT FIRST had lost its near hind plate.
