Racing Incident Report

Near the winning post the first time, SEATTLE SUN was crowded for room by ABLE WIN which itself was tight inside BON BON which had a tendency to get its head on the side and lay in away from the heels of KOWLOON'S BLESSING. In the early stages, BRUIN SUPREME pulled hard, in addition to this hung out badly throughout. About the 900 Metres, SEATTLE SUN and ABLE WIN came together. When questioned, Apprentice S K Sit (SPLENDID PATROL) said his instructions had been from a gate towards outside to jump cleanly and take the horse to the lead. He said when the gates opened SPLENDID PATROL bounded in the air somewhat then bumped the hindquarters of OCEAN CHANNEL, became unbalanced and as a consequence got well back. He said SPLENDID PATROL is a hard going horse and he made the decision not to shift towards the rail behind other runners as he was concerned he might not be able to manage SPLENDID PATROL in such a position, he therefore felt he had little choice but to settle down in a rearward position but wide. Along the back he said he made some ground on SPLENDID PATROL, but the horse commenced to hang out and he felt it was beaten well before straightening. The explanations submitted by Apprentice S K Sit for the ride were accepted. The Stewards afforded Mr P C Kan, trainer of COMMON PLACE, an opportunity of explaining the horse's improved run tonight when compared with the three disappointing starts it had so far this season. Mr Kan said at the end of last year COMMON PLACE ran creditably, but this season has been very disappointing and in tonight's race he gave COMMON PLACE little or no chance of success and for it to win as it did had completely surprised him. ABLE WIN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
