Racing Incident Report

Before being presented in the Parade Ring, it was noted that CHAMP DE UNION had shifted its off side front plate. This was adjusted before the horse was presented. After arriving at the gates, the off side hind plate fitted to OVATION was examined, found to be fitted correctly and the horse was passed suitable to race. DR MORE left the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about, as a consequence of this lost considerable ground. Just as the gates opened, BULL'S EYE went down behind and left the gates slowly. On jumping, TRIPLE EXPRESSO threw its head about, then shifted in and was checked off the hindquarters of CHAMP DE UNION. About the 1000 Metres, BULL'S EYE, which had a tendency to be pulling, got its head up when being eased to avoid the heels of WINNING BOY (A Marcus) which shifted in when not clear. It was decided not to take any direct action, but A Marcus was reprimanded and told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. When asked about the performance of PRIME WITNESS, D Dunn said two starts back at Happy Valley the horse had been ridden quietly, found trouble in the run but closed the race off strongly. He said at its last run the intention had again been to ride PRIME WITNESS somewhere about midfield, but this proved unsuccessful and the run that day was very disappointing. D Dunn said he had been riding the horse in work leading up to today's race, this had continued to be good and it was hoped that PRIME WITNESS would run well today, however, he was somewhat concerned regarding the 1400 Metres of today's race. He said before the race he was instructed by the owners and Mr D A Hayes, trainer, to be positive from the gates and take up a position somewhere in the first 3 or 4. He said he was able to do this and PRIME WITNESS travelled well, however, he thought in the run he might have got to the front too soon, but even allowing for this PRIME WITNESS kept on to the line. BULL'S EYE and WINNING BOY were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
