Racing Incident Report
At declaration time, D Dunn was declared by Trainer D A Hayes to ride SPOT ON when he had already had a commitment for POWER OF SUCCESS. Trainer D A Hayes was fined $2,000 for a declaration error. SMILEY WIN was slowly away. For some distance rounding the Home Turn, SMILEY WIN was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOLD FLASK and tight inside ZENON LIGHT. Approaching the winning post, ARROWMINT, which was closing the race off quite well, was checked when SMILEY WIN (Apprentice M W Leung) shifted out to take a position between HEADING TO WIN and SPOT ON. When ARROWMINT checked, some inconvenience was caused to FORTUNE SALLIAN. Apprentice M W Leung was reprimanded and told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. D Whyte (OBRIGADO) explained after the 200 Metres there was a run between HAPPY ECLIPSE and METRO FLYER, but at the time OBRIGADO was not finding the line as strongly as he had hoped and also he did anticipate METRO FLYER would shift in, which it ultimately did. With this in mind, he elected to steady away from that run and shifted to the outside of METRO FLYER to go forward and avoid what could have been a nasty check. He concluded by saying OBRIGADO had hung in throughout the race. The explanations submitted were accepted. G Mossé (GOLDEN BELL) said when the horse ran last Sunday at Happy Valley it had initially been one of the standby runners and was included late. He said on that occasion from a good draw and over further ground the rider was asked to lead, however, today over a shorter trip and from a gate towards the outside he had been instructed to ensure the horse settled towards the rear, was given an uninterrupted run in the Straight and an opportunity to close the race off which G Mossé said the horse did. He did go on to say had GOLDEN BELL drawn a better gate, he expected the horse would have been ridden in a more forward position. POWER OF SUCCESS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
