Racing Incident Report

EXTRAORDINARY was slowly away. HOI POLLOI left the gates a little awkwardly, shifted ground and brushed the hindquarters of NAZAKAT II. From a difficult gate, HENNESSY STAR was caught wide and was not able to find any cover. Near the 400 Metres, HOLLYWOOD STAR was steadied when close to the heels of NAZAKAT II and tight inside MAGIC WIN. Near the 200 Metres, W M Lai (PRETTY BABY) momentarily dropped his off side rein. H K Yim (HOI POLLOI) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that near the 200 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in whilst riding it along when not clear of QUI VIVRA VERRA. As a consequence of this, QUI VIVRA VERRA lost running to which it was rightfully entitled and was checked. H K Yim was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 7 February 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin next Sunday 20 January 2002. The Stewards allowed Mr K L Man, trainer of PERFECT MOMENT, and D Dunn, rider, an opportunity of explaining the horse's improved performance when compared with its last run at Sha Tin on 5 January 2002. Mr Man pointed out the horse only joined his stable early in December and at that time he was concerned with the manner in which it moved. He said after the Sha Tin run which was only fair, he did point out to the owners that the horse may be looking for more ground and suggested it be backed up reasonably quickly and tried at Happy Valley for the first time. He said the horse had lost a little weight since its last run and had been given a reasonable reduction in its ratings. He said before the race tonight he did point out to the connections the horse would run a better race. D Dunn said he had ridden the horse before it joined Mr Man's stable and had again ridden it at Sha Tin when the run in his opinion was probably better than it looked. He said when the horse ran towards the end of November, he had ridden it in a forward position and it had started to give ground 600 Metres out and finished well back whereas at Sha Tin early in January, the horse was making some ground and he was not able to ride it to the finish in his usual fashion. He said like Mr Man he had noticed the action of the horse had improved over recent times. He said he explained to the connections before the race he also thought the horse would run better tonight, but the manner in which it closed the race off and won did surprise him. The explanations submitted by Mr Man and D Dunn were accepted. When questioned, D Whyte (MAGIC WIN) explained he had not been riding the horse in any of its work, but did see it trial recently at Sha Tin which he thought was very impressive. D Whyte said the intention before the race was to lead, but in the early stages when PRETTY BABY and BORN SMART went forward, he was caught wide. He said he did consider pressing on to try and go forward, but BORN SMART was racing keenly inside him and he thought had he gone forward it would have resulted in a three way battle for the front which would clearly have been against the interests of his mount and the other two involved. He hoped he would be able to find a position behind BORN SMART, but was not able to do so, was obliged to race three wide throughout and over the concluding stages MAGIC WIN weakened. It should be noted that MAGIC WIN has had 39 days off since it last raced and its body weight has increased by 26 lbs. MAGIC WIN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
