Racing Incident Report

On jumping, ENORMOUS WAY, which had been steadied to take up a position towards the rear, threw its head about. W M Lai (SONG FOR SZESZE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that approaching the 800 Metres he shifted his mount inwards from behind LASER GLORY when not clear of WISH COME TRUE. As a consequence of this, WISH COME TRUE lost running to which it was rightfully entitled behind SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT and was checked. QUICK STEP, which was following WISH COME TRUE, was hampered in consequence. W M Lai was suspended from riding in races until Monday 17 June 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of this suspension is to take immediate effect. In addition he was fined $60,000. After the 800 Metres, SONG FOR SZESZE accidentally clipped the heels of SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT and nearly fell. As a consequence of this, inconvenience was caused to FRENCH CONNECTION and WISH COME TRUE. QUICK STEP, which was following FRENCH CONNECTION, was shifted out abruptly. This obliged MASTER MAGIC to shift out and cover extra ground. After the 400 Metres, QUICK STEP was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between UTMOST EASY and LASER GLORY. Near the 200 Metres, Apprentice M W Leung (ENORMOUS WAY) dropped his whip. In the run to the winning post, FRENCH CONNECTION was inclined to get out. Apprentice S K Sit (FAMOUS BRAND) said the horse travelled satisfactorily in the run and handled today's going, but he was of the view the 1600 Metres today proved too difficult for FAMOUS BRAND at this stage of its racing career. He said the horse went into the race well and it was hoped it would run well. Mr K W Lui, trainer of FAMOUS BRAND, said it is his intention to immediately give the horse a rest. As a consequence of this assurance, no further action was taken. FAMOUS BRAND was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
