Racing Incident Report

COUNTRY DRAGON was withdrawn on 1.4.03 on veterinary grounds (wound to right hind cannon). Before being permitted to race again, COUNTRY DRAGON will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, E Legrix, rider of RARE, expressed concern about the horse's action to Dr C M Riggs, Head of Veterinary Clinical Services who was the Veterinary Surgeon positioned at the Start. RARE was examined by Dr Riggs including being trotted up. Dr Riggs said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. E Legrix informed the Starter that he would not ride RARE because of his concern with the horse's action. The Stewards therefore ordered the withdrawal of RARE. After the race, E Legrix explained he had ridden RARE in track work last Monday morning when it worked by itself and following that work he reported to Mr G Lane, trainer of RARE, that the horse was stiff in its action. Mr Lane said RARE on occasions and particularly when working by itself is an awkward mover and can appear to be stiff. The Stewards made the decision to withdraw RARE in line with their policy of not directing any rider to ride a horse against his wish. RARE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, RARE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings. ETERNAL FUN began very awkwardly, got its head up, shifted in abruptly and bumped CONVERGENCE. After the 1200 Metres, CONVERGENCE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when momentarily crowded for room inside STRATEGIC SELECT. Near the 1000 Metres, ROYAL ARMY became unbalanced and shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ETERNAL FUN. After the 600 Metres, WINNING BOY became unbalanced and dipped when racing close to the heels of SEREVI which was giving ground. Throughout the race, ETERNAL FUN hung in and on a number of occasions caused crowding to CONVERGENCE. G Mossé (STRATEGIC SELECT) said tonight from a barrier towards the inside, he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position. He said in accordance with those instructions, he rode STRATEGIC SELECT along after the start. WINNING BOY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of WINNING BOY after the race did not reveal any significant findings. SEREVI was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SEREVI, which tailed off, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. However, before SEREVI can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. MASTERY and GOOD NEWS were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 3 Apr. 2003) :
RARE
It was reported last night RARE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards when E Legrix, its rider, said he did not wish to ride the horse because of concerns he had with its action during the preliminary.  Prior to the race, the Veterinary Surgeon positioned at the Start examined the horse and did not detect any significant abnormality.  RARE was again examined following the race by the Senior Veterinary Officer and he was also unable to detect any significant abnormality.
RARE was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer G Lane this morning and the horse was noted to have a choppy, restricted hind limb action which the horse consistently displays and is usually warmed out during exercise.  The hind limb action of RARE will be investigated by the stable Veterinary Surgeon.
Before being allowed to race again, RARE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
SEREVI
Following the race, SEREVI, which tailed out, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer.  He said at that time there were no significant findings.  SEREVI was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer K L Man this morning and he said the horse was noted to have significant back pain and was slightly lame in the right fore leg.
As previously advised, SEREVI will be required to pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
