Racing Incident Report

As the gates opened, FAIRWAY FINDER put its head down, began awkwardly and stumbled. Because of this, M Walker, its rider, became badly unbalanced. ABLE MARS began awkwardly and lost ground, then tailed out. The performance of ABLE MARS was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WOODSON, WISDOM EXPRESS and MONEY were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, GIFTED RUNNER was steadied away from the heels of ACE OF PACE (G Schofield) which shifted in when not quite clear. G Schofield was reprimanded and told to exercise more care in similar circumstances. At the 1000 Metres, WISDOM EXPRESS was steadied away from the heels of BEAMING RIVER. At the same time, ON SHAN EXPRESS got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD CHANCE. MONEY, which was following, was inconvenienced. For some distance after the 800 Metres, WOODSON raced awkwardly and got its head up. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, ON SHAN EXPRESS got its head on the side and shifted out. This caused inconvenience to MONEY which was hampered and carried wider. Shortly after straightening, FAIRWAY FINDER became unbalanced after being bumped by MONEY. D Dunn (ON SHAN EXPRESS) said the intention had been for the horse to lead or to be ridden right on the pace. He said ON SHAN EXPRESS began cleanly, however, was slow to muster speed despite his riding and consequently got further back than he had hoped. He said when GOOD CHANCE steadied in front of him making the first turn, he lost further ground. He said because he was further back than he wished, he was hoping to improve from the 600 Metres, however, was not able to do so when he was racing behind GOOD CHANCE and WOODSON and those horses failed to carry him forward. He said after straightening he obtained running, ON SHAN EXPRESS initially responded well to his riding, however, over the final 200 Metres hung in. He said tonight ON SHAN EXPRESS was dropping back in distance from 1400 Metres to 1200 Metres and in his opinion raced in a manner which suggested it would be better suited racing over 1600 Metres. ON SHAN EXPRESS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, ON SHAN EXPRESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings other than the horse was "blowing heavily" and mildly distressed. ACE OF PACE and BEAMING RIVER were sent for sampling.
