Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, MR BASKETBALL was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse was mildly lame in the right fore leg and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of MR BASKETBALL. Before being permitted to race again, MR BASKETBALL will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. INDUSTRIAL PRIDE and SMART CHIEF were slow to begin. On jumping, FORTUNE DANCER and NEVER HEADED bumped as a result of NEVER HEADED being carried in by GOOD WIN. At the 1600 Metres, ACME OF SURPRISE was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of GOOD WIN which shifted in when barely clear. At the 1400 Metres, CHERISHED was awkwardly placed tight inside the heels of TURBOJET. At the 1100 Metres, THE PIONEER became unbalanced when racing tight inside the heels of BOLD VISION. Also at the 1100 Metres, ADMIRAL was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between PRIME VAIN which shifted out slightly and SMART CHIEF. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, THE PIONEER was steadied when crowded for room by ADMIRAL which had its head on the side and hung in. THE PIONEER and GOOD WIN were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, THE PIONEER and GOOD WIN were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. The performances of THE PIONEER and GOOD WIN, both last start winners and having tailed out tonight, were considered unacceptable. Before THE PIONEER and GOOD WIN will be permitted to race again, they must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SMART CHIEF and BOLD VISION were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 23 May 2003) :
After the race, THE PIONEER was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said he was not able to detect any significant findings. THE PIONEER was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P C Kan yesterday and at this time was noted to have a stiff, restricted hind limb action.
As previously advised, THE PIONEER will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before racing again.
