Racing Incident Report

SAGACIOUS was withdrawn on 27.5.03 on veterinary grounds (right fore tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter KING OF FISH. Before being allowed to race again, SAGACIOUS will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. While being transported to the course, MADE TO FIGURE became fractious. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it had suffered a laceration and bruising to the head and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of MADE TO FIGURE. Also while being transported to the course, DIAMOND MOOD shifted its right hind plate and suffered minor abrasions to the right hind pastern. After arriving at the course, DIAMOND MOON was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, SUNNY RIVIERA was bumped by LUCKY SUPERSTAR which began awkwardly and shifted out. Also on jumping, MASTERY, GOOD NEWS and REWARD were crowded for room between LATTE which shifted in slightly and KING OF FISH which shifted out. Shortly after this, LATTE then shifted out and caused crowding on its outside to WINNING BOY. When WINNING BOY was crowded, SUNNY RIVIERA, which was shifting and crossing behind runners, was steadied in consequence. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, GOOD NEWS was steadied when racing tight inside KING OF FISH. In the early part of the Straight, GOOD NEWS was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind REWARD. At the 200 Metres, DIAMOND MOON was disappointed for running between LATTE which was giving ground and GOOD NEWS which shifted to the outside of REWARD. F Coetzee (WINNING BOY) said when he cantered the horse during its preliminary, he was concerned with its action, however, at the trot the horse appeared sound. He said he expressed his concern to the Veterinary Surgeon stationed at the Start who then examined the horse initially at the trot and then at the canter. F Coetzee said when being examined, WINNING BOY appeared to him to be sound in its action and he concurred with the Veterinary Surgeon's opinion that the horse was suitable to race. He said when the gates opened, he immediately rode WINNING BOY along in the hope that he would be able to obtain a forward position, however, the horse initially failed to show pace and then shortly after the start when crowded for room he heard a noise similar to that made when a horse hits itself, he immediately again became concerned with the horse's action and because of this he eased it out of the race. WINNING BOY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, WINNING BOY was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at this time there were no significant findings. Before being permitted to race again, WINNING BOY will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. S Dye (LATTE) said he became concerned in the early stages that he was not able to lead REWARD and was obliged to race outside that horse. He said when racing in this position, LATTE would not relax and because of this failed to finish its race off and gave ground in the Straight. He pointed out as has been mentioned in the past, LATTE's two winning performances have been when it has been able to obtain a "soft lead". He added tonight the horse was racing in a considerably stronger race than that which it won at its last start. The explanations of S Dye were accepted. LATTE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, LATTE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. MASTERY and KING OF FISH were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 29 May 2003) :
After the race, WINNING BOY, which was eased down shortly after the start, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. WINNING BOY was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A T Millard this morning and was found to be lame in both front legs.
As previously advised, WINNING BOY will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before racing again.
