Racing Incident Report

AURELIAN was withdrawn on 5.12.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter STRONG GALLOP (W C Marwing). Before being allowed to race again, AURELIAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CUPID was slow to begin. ABLE WIN began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of STRONG GALLOP. LUCKY SUPERSTAR and WINNING SUNSHINE were a little slow to begin. Then approaching the winning post on the first occasion, WINNING SUNSHINE was steadied when tightened for room between LUCKY SUPERSTAR and PORTER RICKS which shifted in slightly away from THUNDER MAN. T Mundry (ARMONDO) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of THUNDER MAN, causing that horse to be carried in which in turn resulted in PORTER RICKS being carried in across the rightful running of LUCKY SUPERSTAR which as a result was checked. In the circumstances of this case, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for T Mundry's licence to ride in races be suspended until Sunday 21 December 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days.) The Stewards acceded to a request from T Mundry that he be permitted to commence the suspension immediately as a number of races at the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday night 10 December 2003 are set aside for invited riders only. Near the 1300 Metres, WINNING SUNSHINE was steadied away from the heels of STRONG GALLOP. Near the 1200 Metres, PORTER RICKS was crowded for room inside THUNDER MAN which was racing tight inside SHINING DRAGON which was proving difficult to settle. For a considerable distance after the 600 Metres, PORTER RICKS was awkwardly placed inside the heels of THUNDER MAN which was racing tight inside the heels of FIGHTING MASCOT. Shortly after straightening, WINNING SUNSHINE was steadied and shifted to the outside of ABLE WIN to obtain clear running. At the 100 Metres, SHINING DRAGON, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of THUNDER MAN. After the 100 Metres, FIGHTING MASCOT, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between THUNDER MAN and ABLE WIN which shifted in slightly. No action was taken. Over the concluding stages, THUNDER MAN was crowded for room between REWARD and ABLE WIN which had been carried in slightly by WINNING SUNSHINE. Almost right on the winning post, ABLE WIN was crowded for room inside WINNING SUNSHINE which continued to shift in despite the efforts of its rider, J Spencer. No action was taken. Also near the winning post, STRONG GALLOP was momentarily steadied away from the heels of LUCKY SUPERSTAR which shifted out slightly. In the Straight, REWARD hung in. SHINING DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SHINING DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SHINING DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING SUNSHINE, ARMONDO and REWARD were sent for sampling.
