Racing Incident Report

AMBITION was slow to begin. OPERA MAGIC began awkwardly and lost ground. At the 1200 Metres, OPERA MAGIC, which was being hard ridden after being slow to begin, brushed the running rail when crowded for room inside FORTUNE BOY which was proving difficult to settle and shifted out after getting its head up when momentarily crowded by ABLE EAGLE. In the circumstances, the Stewards did not consider it appropriate to take any action. After this, FORTUNE BOY continued to prove very difficult to settle, continually raced with its head up and near the 800 Metres was checked to avoid the heels of MONEY STRONG which itself was momentarily steadied away from the heels of RAIN IN SPRING which shifted in when barely clear. At the 400 Metres, FIRST AMONG EQUALS and WELL BEST were carried wider by FORM FIT which shifted out when giving ground. Near the 100 Metres, CORAJOSO was steadied away from the heels of AMBITION. After the 100 Metres, AMBITION (D Whyte) was awkwardly placed inside the heels of FIRST AMONG EQUALS which was shifting in when barely clear. Because of this, D Whyte stopped riding his mount for a short distance. RAIN IN SPRING and FORM FIT were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, RAIN IN SPRING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, RAIN IN SPRING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Also after the race, FORM FIT, which was eased down and tailed out, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, FORM FIT will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AMBITION, SANBENITO and KOWLOON STAR were sent for sampling. Following the race, A Delpech (GOODWOOD) expressed concern over the horse's action in the Straight. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea, however, at this time there were no other significant findings. Before being permitted to race again, GOODWOOD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 2 January 2004)
Following the race, A Delpech expressed concern over the action of GOODWOOD. The horse was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea, however, at this time there were no other significant findings. GOODWOOD was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A T Millard this morning. He said at this time the horse was noted to be slightly lame in the left front leg with a warm fetlock joint. As previously advised, GOODWOOD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.
