Racing Incident Report

On jumping, ABLE EAGLE put its head down and blundered, and SPARKY got its head up and lost ground. Also on jumping, GLOBE MARK was crowded for room between HELENE ELEGANCE and SENSIBLE WAY which shifted in. In this crowding, both GLOBE MARK and HELENE ELEGANCE became unbalanced. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, AMO was awkwardly placed inside GLOBE MARK and lost ground. Near the 900 Metres, HELENE ELEGANCE was momentarily steadied when tight inside SENSIBLE WAY which had its head on the side and shifted in. At the 700 Metres, HELENE ELEGANCE was steadied away from the heels of SENSIBLE WAY which shifted in when only just clear. At the 600 Metres, MONEY STRONG was carried wider by KOWLOON STAR which shifted out. After the 600 Metres, HEALTHY FRUITS was carried out by GLOBE MARK which shifted out. On straightening, BEAUTY PLUS lost its footing and almost fell. ABLE EAGLE and MONEY STRONG, which were following, were hampered in consequence. After this, BEAUTY PLUS was eased down. For some distance approaching and passing the 400 Metres, HELENE ELEGANCE was held up and unable to improve when racing behind SENSIBLE WAY and inside GLOBE MARK. For a short distance after straightening, AMO was held up and unable to improve when close to the heels of GLOBE MARK. For some distance near the 100 Metres, ABLE EAGLE was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GLOBE MARK which was giving ground. Apprentice K T Yeung (KOWLOON STAR) said he had been instructed to lead if possible on the horse. He said KOWLOON STAR was slow to begin, he immediately rode it along in an attempt to make up lost ground, however, runners on his inside had already gone more forward of him. He said approaching the 1000 Metres he was following HEALTHY FRUITS and when that horse steadied he had to steady to avoid its heels and as a consequence lost further ground. He said after the 900 Metres BEAUTY PLUS which had been racing to his outside commenced to shift in and he felt in the circumstances it was wise not to ride his horse along as this would place him in a difficult position close to the heels of BEAUTY PLUS. He said he then continued to follow BEAUTY PLUS and making the Home Turn decided to come to the inside in the hope that he would obtain clear running through the field near the fence, however, over about the final 100 Metres he was aware DOWN FOR THE COUNT and HELENE ELEGANCE were stopping in front of him and he felt if he continued to ride KOWLOON STAR out he would run onto the heels of those runners, he therefore did not ride KOWLOON STAR out to the end of the race as he normally would. The explanation submitted by Apprentice K T Yeung was noted. S Dye (DOWN FOR THE COUNT) said from a gate towards the outside he had to make use of the horse to go forward to avoid being caught wide. He said it was not until near the 800 Metres that he cleared runners to his inside which enabled him to shift to the fence. He said DOWN FOR THE COUNT in the past had shown itself to be suspect at the distance of 1200 Metres and the early effort of tonight's race meant that it tired in the Straight and gave ground quickly. KOWLOON STAR, DOWN FOR THE COUNT and BEAUTY PLUS were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of KOWLOON STAR, DOWN FOR THE COUNT and BEAUTY PLUS after the race did not show any significant findings. TOWN OF FIONN and AMO were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted HELENE ELEGANCE had lost its left front plate. Following the running of this race, Club Officials including Mr J P Ridley, Head of Racing Operations & Equestrian, inspected the section of the track rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight and considered it suitable to continue racing. Also, all riders were informed this track inspection was undertaken.
