Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, LA MERVEILLE, became fractious and kicked out behind. The horse was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. CRESCENDO and MYTHIC STEED were slow to begin. Shortly after jumping, PLEASANT JOURNEY was checked and FOOD LOVER steadied when crowded for room between KIWI DASH and SOARING ANGEL, both of which shifted ground. ALLEGRO began awkwardly, failed to muster speed in the early stages and got well back. Near the 1000 Metres, PLEASANT JOURNEY was momentarily steadied away from the heels of FOOD LOVER. On straightening, PLEASANT JOURNEY was steadied and shifted to the inside of SAVINGS ACCOUNT which was giving ground. Over the concluding stages, LA MERVEILLE, which was hanging in, shifted ground and was awkwardly placed outside the heels of MYTHIC STEED. Because of this, LA MERVEILLE was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Apprentice H W Lai (STAMINA) said he had been instructed to ride the horse with cover if possible as it had previously shown a tendency to prove difficult to settle. He said STAMINA began well, he therefore elected to ride his mount along in the early stages in the hope that he would be able to clear runners to his inside and shift to the fence. He said it was then his intention to steady his mount and obtain cover if possible. He said shortly after the start it became apparent to him that he would not have sufficient speed to cross PERFECT SCORE, he therefore attempted to steady his mount in the hope of being able to come back and obtain cover, however, STAMINA immediately got its head up, proved difficult to settle, over-raced and as a consequence travelled outside the lead. He said making the Home Turn STAMINA got its head on the side and hung out which allowed another runner to improve on his inside. Apprentice Lai's explanation was reported. B Prebble (HIGH PRICE) said his mount travelled comfortably in the early stages, but then became unbalanced in its action making the first turn. He said on straightening after shifting HIGH PRICE into clear running, the horse did not quicken as he would have expected and after the 200 Metres was momentarily awkwardly positioned between KIWI DASH and SOARING ANGEL. He said the manner in which HIGH PRICE raced today indicated to him that it would be better suited by a distance of further than 1400 Metres. HIGH PRICE, ABLE MARS and MYTHIC STEED were sent for sampling.
