Racing Incident Report

RAIN IN SPRING began awkwardly, then shortly afterwards made contact with the hindquarters of KEEN FLYER. As a consequence, RAIN IN SPRING lost ground. DILIGENT was slow to begin. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, DILIGENT lost ground when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SPEEDY EXPRESS which was unable to maintain its position. For some distance after this, DILIGENT continued to be awkwardly placed inside the heels of SPEEDY EXPRESS and continued to lose ground. Throughout the race, DEVON ELITE raced wide and without cover and making the Home Turn hung out. After passing the 200 Metres, as MAJESTIC FEELING improved on its outside, KEEN FLYER got its head up for a considerable distance and did not stretch out. DEVON ELITE and SPEEDY EXPRESS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DEVON ELITE after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, SPEEDY EXPRESS, which tailed out, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of SPEEDY EXPRESS was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SPEEDY EXPRESS will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUN POWER and MAJESTIC FEELING were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 October 2004)
DEVON ELITE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. DEVON ELITE was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D Oughton this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be "jarred up" in the left front fetlock. Before being allowed to race again, DEVON ELITE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
