Racing Incident Report
ESPRIT D'OR began awkwardly, a short distance after the start was checked when crowded for room between DOUCAI and GOOD FRIENDS which shifted out. RIGHT DECISION, TIME SUPREME and FREE WAY were slow to begin. NEW MILESTONE began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, JOYFUL MASTER got its head up when being restrained to take a position on the rail behind SUPERSONIC. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, TIME SUPREME got its head on the side, shifted out across the heels of MILLION CHASE and was checked. Passing the 900 Metres, MILLION CHASE was steadied away from the heels of KAO AND MING which shifted in when barely clear. Approaching and passing the 800 Metres, JOYFUL MASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPERSONIC and on a number of occasions shifted in and brushed the running rail. Near the 600 Metres, JOYFUL MASTER again lay in and bumped the running rail. After the 600 Metre, FREE WAY and GOOD FRIENDS made contact due to both horses shifting ground. Shortly after entering the Home Straight, MILLION CHASE was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of FREE WAY (Y T Cheng) which shifted in. Y T Cheng was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future. KAO AND MING travelled wide and without cover throughout and in the Straight gave ground. The performances of ESPRIT D'OR and RIGHT DECISION, which finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, both ESPRIT D'OR and RIGHT DECISION will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, A Starke (DOUCAI) said he had ridden the horse at its last two starts and both times it had failed to finish its race off when ridden up on the speed. He said from the wide draw today he had been instructed by the trainer of the horse, Mr T W Leung, to ride his mount quietly in the early stages and obtain a position with cover in the hope that the horse would finish the race off. He added when making the first turn and again making the Home Turn DOUCAI was hampered by TIME SUPREME which shifted out, but when placed under pressure in the Straight DOUCAI finished the race off only fairly. Mr Leung confirmed the instructions given to A Starke and stated he was of the opinion had DOUCAI gone forward from its wide barrier, it would not have been able to finish its race off. When questioned, F Coetzee (SUPERSONIC) said it had been his intention to lead on the horse, however, when NEW MILESTONE improved around him coming into the first turn, he elected to take a seat on the horse rather than being caught in a speed battle. NEW MILESTONE and SUPERSONIC were sent for sampling.
