Racing Incident Report

KING OF TURBOT and PREMIER CRU were slow to begin. GREAT STAR got its head up on jumping and began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, MILLENNIUM DAWN was steadied when crowded for room between GREAT STAR and UNIVERSAL PEGASUS which shifted out. After this, UNIVERSAL PEGASUS was bumped by FANTASTIC WINNER which shifted out. Then UNIVERSAL PEGASUS got its head on the side and hung in. At the 1000 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT, which was travelling ungenerously, was steadied away from the heels of FUNNY FACE which shifted in momentarily. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT hung out and was steadied away from the heels of PREMIER CRU. At the 300 Metres, PREMIER CRU, which was beginning to close the race off, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of KING OF TURBOT to continue going forward. Over the concluding stages, WINNING EMPEROR was inclined to hang out. A Delpech (SUPER MARKSMAN) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said in the past SUPER MARKSMAN had shown itself to be somewhat unreliable. He said he enjoyed a good run in the early stages of the race, however, before making the Home Turn SUPER MARKSMAN commenced to hang out and he became concerned the horse would not figure in the finish at that stage. He said after straightening he rode SUPER MARKSMAN vigorously and the horse kept on one-paced until near the 200 Metres, however, afterwards gave ground quickly. SUPER MARKSMAN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SUPER MARKSMAN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER MARKSMAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING EMPEROR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, WINNING EMPEROR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had returned with an abnormal breathing noise and an endoscopic examination showed the horse was displaying signs of an epiglottic entrapment and a displacement of the soft palate. Before being allowed to race again, WINNING EMPEROR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GREAT STAR and CHEERFUL BOY were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 17 January 2005)
SUPER MARKSMAN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. SUPER MARKSMAN was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer Y O Wong this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be mildly lame in the right hind leg and left front leg. As previously advised, SUPER MARKSMAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.
