Racing Incident Report

TEA FOR CHAMP was withdrawn on 21.1.05 on veterinary grounds (significant blood in the trachea on post-exercise scoping) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter NOBLE BOSS (Y T Cheng). GOLDEN SUPREME was also withdrawn on 21.1.05 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SUPER DANA (Apprentice P H Lo). Before being permitted to race again, TEA FOR CHAMP and GOLDEN SUPREME will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SEASONS KNACK and NOBLE BOSS were slow to begin. On jumping, ABLE MARS bounded in the air and began awkwardly. Also on jumping, MEMBERS GLORY got its head up and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between MY EGO and SUPER DANA which on jumping shifted in. On straightening, MONZA KING, which was inclined to lay in, blundered when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DEEP PURPLE which at this time shifted out slightly. No action was taken. At the 400 Metres, DEEP PURPLE was bumped by DONGGUAN VICTORY which was endeavouring to shift towards the outside of SUPER DANA. Shortly after the 400 Metres, SHENANEGAN, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running towards the outside of FLORAL DANCER, shifted out and bumped SUPER DANA. From shortly after the 400 Metres until after the 200 Metres, KA KA WIN was steadied when held up and unable to improve behind MASTER MARAUDER and ABLE MARS. S Sanders (SEASONS KNACK) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 200 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in when not clear of ABLE MARS, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. S Sanders was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 3 February 2005 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Wednesday 26 January 2005. In addition, S Sanders was fined $10,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. MASTER MARAUDER, which was racing on the inside of ABLE MARS, was hampered in this incident and KA KA WIN which was following was checked. When questioned regarding the improved performance of SUPER DANA, Trainer D A Hayes said he was disappointed with the horse's last performance when in his opinion it raced like a tired horse. He said subsequent to that race he backed off in the track work he had given to SUPER DANA and basically restricted it to cantering. He said leading into today's race the stable had very little confidence with the chances of SUPER DANA and the win was of a surprise to him. He was unable to offer any further reason for the improved performance, however, he did point out SUPER DANA might also have benefited from the apprentice's claim today. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (FLORAL DANCER) said he had been instructed to sit 2nd or 3rd in the run, it was anticipated MASTER MARAUDER would lead and he should endeavour to follow that horse. He said FLORAL DANCER began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall which caused him to lose the use of his right stirrup which he reached down to regain about 100 Metres after the start. He said as a consequence of this FLORAL DANCER got back to be racing behind SHENANEGAN slightly worse than midfield. He said it appeared to him that the pace of the race after passing the winning post on the first occasion was going to be very moderate and having in mind his instructions he shifted out from behind SHENANEGAN and went forward. He said after the 1400 Metres he obtained a position three wide outside the leaders, however, he was obliged to race without cover. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of FLORAL DANCER, confirmed the instructions issued to E Saint-Martin and after viewing the film said he was satisfied E Saint-Martin had ridden the horse in accordance with his intentions. The Stewards told E Saint-Martin that whilst they appreciate riders must where possible ride their mounts in accordance with the trainers' instructions, circumstances occur which mean this is not possible and in those circumstances they must exercise their own initiative. He was further told that on this occasion by shifting out to improve after passing the winning post on the first occasion his riding had lacked the judgement expected from someone of his standing. KNIGHT TEMPLAR, SUPER DANA and DEEP PURPLE were sent for sampling.
