Racing Incident Report

DAY OR NIGHT was slow to begin and shortly afterwards became unbalanced and lost ground when crowded between DAVE'S BEST and ABLE KNIGHT which shifted out after being bumped by TOP HONOR which in turn shifted ground after being bumped by MINE HOST. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, ABLE KNIGHT hung in. At the 250 Metres, DAY OR NIGHT, which was beginning to close the race off, was steadied when unable to continue improving between CYPRESS HILL and FIRST AMONG EQUALS which at this time shifted out. Near the 200 Metres, ABLE KNIGHT, which was giving ground, became unbalanced when crowded for room between AGILITY and DR WELL, both of which shifted ground. For the major part of the race, DAVE'S BEST and TOP HONOR raced wide and without cover. When questioned, W M Lai (LUCKY SIXER) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse as the horse in the past had shown it raced its best when ridden in this manner. He said shortly after the start LUCKY SIXER was crossed by DASHING CHAMPION which had drawn wider. He said after this he rode LUCKY SIXER along in an endeavour to follow his riding instructions, however, as he went forward DASHING CHAMPION which was being ridden by a 10 lb apprentice held its position to his inside. He said he was hopeful of being able to cross DASHING CHAMPION prior to the turn at the 800 Metres and then steady the pace to allow his mount to have a breather. He said when DASHING CHAMPION continued to remain on his inside he continued going forward and eventually reached the lead near the 600 Metres. W M Lai conceded that he might have made too much use of LUCKY SIXER in obtaining the lead. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of LUCKY SIXER, confirmed the riding instructions issued to W M Lai. He said whilst he was satisfied with the riding of W M Lai, in his opinion the manner in which LUCKY SIXER was continually ridden in the early stages might have contributed to the race being run at a pace which was too quick. W M Lai was severely reprimanded and told in the opinion of the Stewards he had overdone his riding instructions on this occasion. He was further advised in slightly different circumstances he may have been charged with a breach of a serious Rule of Racing. DAY OR NIGHT, AGILITY and DR WELL were sent for sampling. Following the race, DAY OR NIGHT was reported to be making an abnormal breathing noise. The Veterinary Officer said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to have a throat inflammation. Before being allowed to race again, DAY OR NIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 9 May 2005)
MINE HOST was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer S Woods yesterday morning. He said he noted the horse to have a fracture of the medial sesamoid bone of the left front leg. Before being permitted to race again, MINE HOST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
