Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, MAMOUSKA was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. TOUCH DOWN and MAMOUSKA were slow to begin. UPPA HAND began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SUNNY DESERT. Near the 1300 Metres, FRIENDSHIP was steadied away from the heels of STAR PRODIGY which at this time was carried wider by CHEERFUL SUNSHINE which when racing ungenerously shifted out after initially shifting in towards UPPA HAND. Also near the 1300 Metres, SUNNY DESERT was steadied when close to the heels of UPPA HAND. For some distance in the middle stages, STAR PRODIGY was awkwardly placed behind CHEERFUL SUNSHINE which continued to race ungenerously, then at the 700 Metres was shifted to the outside of that horse which commenced to give ground. As STAR PRODIGY shifted out, FRIENDSHIP was shifted to the outside of that runner and ridden along to improve. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, DESERT STRIKE was crowded for room and bumped by CHEERFUL SUNSHINE which when continuing to give ground got its head on the side and shifted in. Shortly after this, JUST IN TIME was awkwardly placed inside CHEERFUL SUNSHINE. The performance of CHEERFUL SUNSHINE was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, CHEERFUL SUNSHINE must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards and competitively and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Near the 200 Metres, DESERT STRIKE was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running inside SUNNY DESERT which at this time was carried in slightly by UPPA HAND. For the major part of the race, FREEBIRD, which was racing wide and without cover, hung out, then over the concluding stages hung in. When questioned regarding the performance of A BETTER DRAGON, R Fradd said the horse at no stage of the race travelled as he thought it should. He said while it did make some ground in the Straight, it did not close off as anticipated. He said he was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse and added the work leading into tonight's race was satisfactory. W M Lai (TOUCH DOWN) said he rode the horse towards the rear as is usual. He said TOUCH DOWN travelled comfortably, however, in the Straight did not close off as it usually does. He said he was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. MAMOUSKA, STAR PRODIGY and CHEERFUL SUNSHINE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, MAMOUSKA was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MAMOUSKA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of STAR PRODIGY and CHEERFUL SUNSHINE after the race did not show any significant findings. UPPA HAND and FREEBIRD were sent for sampling.
