Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, FOKINE, which had drawn barrier 13, became fractious, lunged forward and hit the front gates of its stall which resulted in the gates being damaged. FOKINE was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Due to the damage caused to the front gates of stall 13, FOKINE and PACKING ANGEL were shifted out one stall. SAMBUCA was difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, SAMBUCA will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards blundered and lost ground. PALETTE NATURAL was slow to begin. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, TOWN OF FIONN hung in. Prior to straightening, TIBER was steadied when endeavouring to shift to the outside of ABLE PRINCE and tight inside FIGURES. At the same time, THE DUKE became unbalanced behind after shifting in and making contact with TOWN OF FIONN. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, SAMBUCA, which had been ridden along to maintain a position, was checked after becoming unbalanced when crowded for room between MY CHOICE and SPECIAL KING PRAWN which was carried in momentarily by THE DUKE (O Doleuze) which shifted ground. In this incident, crowding was caused to MY CHOICE and GOODY which was following was checked in consequence. The Stewards accepted that O Doleuze attempted to relieve the pressure he was applying to runners to his inside, however, he was nonetheless reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care. Over the concluding stages, THE DUKE got its head on the side and hung in. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the Straight, A Delpech (GOODY) explained as has been expressed in the past the horse is best ridden when held up in its races. He said GOODY has previously shown itself to perform best when produced for a late run in the Home Straight. He said accordingly he rode GOODY quietly in the early stages and the horse travelled well for him. He said after the 600 Metres he shifted to a position to follow SAMBUCA as he felt that horse would carry him forward into the race. He said as he did this FOKINE which had been racing behind him commenced to improve on his inside and prior to straightening was about one length in front of him. He said FOKINE then commenced to shift out and he found himself in an awkward position between the heels of SAMBUCA and FOKINE and as a consequence steadied his mount which allowed FOKINE to continue going forward of him. He said after this GOODY whilst making ground did not finish the race off as he had hoped. A Delpech was told his explanation would be reported, however, he was to ensure that he rode at all times in a manner which was not open to query. SAMBUCA and TRIUMPHANT UNICORN were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SAMBUCA and TRIUMPHANT UNICORN after the race did not show any significant findings. THE DUKE, ABLE PRINCE and FOKINE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 5 September 2005)
TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, TRIUMPHANT UNICORN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
