Racing Incident Report

FIGHTING MASCOT shifted its right front plate in the saddling stalls. This plate was reset. FIGHTING MASCOT was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. FLAMING LAMBORGINI began awkwardly. SING FAY FAY was slow to begin. CLASSIC DELIGHT was slow to begin and was then reluctant to stride out. Near the 300 Metres, RED PEPPER, which was commencing to make ground, was steadied and shifted to the outside of THE KING into clear running. Making the Home Turn, CLASSIC DELIGHT hung out. S Dye (CLASSIC DELIGHT) said in the past the horse had shown itself to be unreliable and proved difficult to ride in its races because of it hanging out. He said today CLASSIC DELIGHT did not begin well, then was reluctant to stride out in the early stages and as a result became detached. He said he kept CLASSIC DELIGHT wide on the track as it was getting its head up and he thought this might have been as a result of sand coming back in the horse's face from runners in front. He said after the 1400 Metres he did place CLASSIC DELIGHT under some pressure in an endeavour to have it make ground and join the back of the field, however, the horse failed to respond, then in the middle stages hung out. He said in his opinion CLASSIC DELIGHT's best performances in Hong Kong had been on rain affected ground and he did not believe the horse appreciated today's track conditions. S Dye was told his explanation would be reported, however, he was to ensure he did his utmost where possible to have his mounts race competitively. G Schofield (DR WELL) said as usual the intention was to have the horse race where it was comfortable. He said in the past DR WELL has raced in a forward position, but generally it is not ridden along to do so. He said because of the pace of today's race after beginning well it soon became apparent to him that DR WELL would not be able to obtain a forward position and he therefore elected to allow DR WELL to drift back and obtain a position with cover behind RIVER ESPERANTO. He said when being ridden in this manner today DR WELL had closed the race off fairly. B Prebble (THE KING) said he had been instructed to go forward and even lead if this did not mean making too much use of the horse. He said if not from a wide barrier he had been asked to drop the horse in and obtain cover. He said after beginning well runners on his inside were hard ridden to go forward and he believed to have led would have required him to make too much use of the horse in a quickly run race. He said he therefore steadied THE KING, however, DR WELL which had drawn inside him came back with him on his inside. He said to carry out his instructions and to ensure he had cover he was required to come back further than he would have wished. Mr A T Millard, trainer of THE KING, confirmed the riding instructions issued to B Prebble and said in the circumstances of this race bearing in mind the fast early tempo he was satisfied with B Prebble's riding. When questioned, C Munce (GREENESSY) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position. He said GREENESSY began only fairly, he immediately rode along in an attempt to obtain a forward position. He said EQUATOR KID which had drawn outside him was also ridden along to go forward and he maintained the position inside that horse, then LUCKY SIXER which was to his inside was ridden along. He said he went forward with LUCKY SIXER which raced outside SING FAY FAY and near the 1200 Metres when racing three wide and without cover he decided to ride along, clear the runners to his inside and cross to the fence in the lead at the 1000 Metres. He said once reaching the lead he endeavoured to steady the tempo of the race. He said in hindsight the effort asked of GREENESSY in the early stages had a bearing on it failing to finish the race off. Mr D Cruz, trainer of GREENESSY, confirmed the instructions issued to C Munce and said he believed C Munce had made too much use of the horse in the early stages. C Munce was told while the Stewards appreciate riders using initiative, his riding on this occasion in the opinion of the Stewards lacked the judgement expected from a rider of his standing. GREENESSY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GREENESSY after the race did not show any significant findings. FIGHTING MASCOT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, FIGHTING MASCOT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was blowing heavily. DAVE'S BEST and FLAMING LAMBORGINI were sent for sampling.
