Racing Incident Report

RENA'S WUNDERBAR was slow to begin. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, CAPABEL was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of METRO LEADER. From the wide barrier, in the early stages, ATHLETIC GOLD travelled wide and without cover. Near the 1100 Metres, CAPABEL was checked and shifted out away from the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES which itself was steadied away from the heels of BRAVERY LUCK when the tempo steadied. After this, CAPABEL was shifted out, was then steadied away from the heels of METRO LEADER and as a result shifted further, causing inconvenience to SMARTY which was carried wider. At the 900 Metres, CAPABEL was checked and SMARTY hampered when the riderless KID GALAXY shifted out. Also at the 900 Metres, METRO LEADER became unbalanced after being bumped by ATHLETIC GOLD which at this time was carried in by the riderless KID GALAXY. At the 400 Metres, METRO LEADER was steadied when awkwardly placed between ATHLETIC GOLD and WE'RE BUDDIES which at this time commenced to shift away from the rail. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred while the Stewards considered whether KID GALAXY, FREE WAY and A BETTER DRAGON had had an unfair start. Evidence was taken from Apprentice C W Wong (FREE WAY) and Mr C H Yip, trainer of the horse, D Whyte (A BETTER DRAGON) and Mr K L Man, trainer of the horse, and Mr A T Millard, trainer of KID GALAXY. A Delpech who was dislodged from KID GALAXY at the start was unable to attend as he was transported to hospital. Evidence was also taken from Mr P Waldron, Starter. The official videos of the start were viewed. The evidence disclosed that as the start was effected, KID GALAXY lunged forward and put its head down, causing A Delpech, its rider, to become unbalanced and be dislodged. Also as the start was effected, A BETTER DRAGON, which had been fractious in its stall, sat down behind, began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground. D Whyte, the rider of A BETTER DRAGON, said the manner in which his mount began caused him to lose his right stirrup which he took some time to re-gather. In those circumstances, the Stewards did not believe KID GALAXY and A BETTER DRAGON had had an unfair start and as such they were declared runners. The evidence also disclosed that as the gates opened, FREE WAY, which had been fractious in its barrier, was being held by a gate attendant and he continued to have hold of the horse after the field had left the gates. In those circumstances, the Stewards believed FREE WAY had had an unfair start and as such acting under the provisions of Rule 12(19) declared the horse to be a non-runner. Before being allowed to race again, A BETTER DRAGON will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. When questioned regarding the improved performance of WE'RE BUDDIES, Mr Y S Tsui, trainer of the horse, said its two most recent starts had been over 2200 Metres and in his opinion the horse had failed to run out the distance on those occasions. He said because of this he decided to drop WE'RE BUDDIES back in distance for tonight's race and to prepare it he gave it a barrier trial 10 days ago to sharpen it up. He said in his opinion WE'RE BUDDIES was better suited racing over the 1650 Metres tonight. RENA'S WUNDERBAR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of RENA'S WUNDERBAR after the race did not show any significant findings. CAPABEL, WE'RE BUDDIES and WISHING WELL were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted KID GALAXY had sustained a laceration to the right front cannon.
