Racing Incident Report

SHANGHAI LAD and LEILATI began awkwardly. RED POWER and FAMOUS DANCER were slow to begin. In the early stages, ABLE ONE proved difficult to settle and pulled its way forward. At the 1400 Metres, FANTASY was steadied away from the heels of LEILATI which got its head up when being restrained to obtain a position with cover. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, LEILATI, which was proving difficult to settle, became unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BRILLIANT ONE. In the Straight, ABLE ONE hung in and after the 50 Metres shifted ground towards the rail. Because of this, D Dunn, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. Over the concluding stages, FANTASY was steadied when awkwardly placed between LEILATI and CLASSA WIN which shifted ground away from GOLDEN SUN while hanging in. When questioned regarding his riding of SHINY RIBBON, F Coetzee said he was instructed to travel from the outside barrier in a midfield position if possible. He said he was told not to "rush" SHINY RIBBON to obtain a forward position. He said SHINY RIBBON began cleanly, he did not restrain his mount but rather let it travel at its own speed in the early stags. He said near the 1500 Metres he shifted across behind runners, then rode along in an endeavour to improve his position on the inside of FIRST AMONG EQUALS. He said the tempo of the race in the early stages meant that the field did not spread out, therefore if he were to continue forward he would have been racing wide on the track. Mr A S Cruz, trainer of SHINY RIBBON, confirmed the instructions issued to F Coetzee. He said whilst SHINY RIBBON has previously travelled in a prominent position in its races, use has been made of the horse to do so as it does not possess natural early speed. He said this was the first occasion on which SHINY RIBBON had drawn the outside barrier. He said he was concerned should SHINY RIBBON be ridden in an attempt to obtain a forward position, the horse would be left racing wide and without cover and he believed therefore it would be preferable to have the horse ridden about midfield if possible. Mr Cruz said he accepted the tempo of the race meant that it would have been difficult for SHINY RIBBON to be in midfield and therefore it was reasonable for F Coetzee to take the horse further back than was instructed. F Coetzee was told his riding had come under notice and he should ensure he rides all mounts in a manner which is not open to query. Mr Cruz was told he has a responsibility to ensure horses trained by him are ridden in a consistent manner where circumstances permit. SHINY RIBBON was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. FIRST AMONG EQUALS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHINY RIBBON and FIRST AMONG EQUALS after the race did not show any significant findings. ABLE ONE, HONEY MONEY and BUMPER BUMPER were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported SHANGHAI LAD had bled from both nostrils.
