Racing Incident Report

At declaration time, Y T Cheng was declared as the rider of both GRAND FIGHTER and PRIMIATA. It was established that Y T Cheng had a firm commitment to ride GRAND FIGHTER. As such, the Stewards permitted D Dunn to be substituted as the rider of PRIMIATA. For this declaration error, Y T Cheng was fined $2,000. PRIMIATA was withdrawn on 9.6.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (inappetance) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MOVE IT (W M Lai). Before being allowed to race again, PRIMIATA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When being saddled, it was noted CRYSTAL had sustained an injury to its left eye. CRYSTAL was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of CRYSTAL. Before being allowed to race again, CRYSTAL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When the gates opened, STRONG SUN stood flat-footed and lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, STRONG SUN will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. STRAIGHT VICTORY began awkwardly, became unbalanced and bumped the outside gate of its stall. SOLAR began awkwardly and stumbled. On jumping, MOVE IT was crowded for room between DON RICARDO and BOLD WIN which shifted out. GRAND FIGHTER began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, MOVE IT was steadied and shifted in across the heels of BOLD WIN. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, WONG'S SUCCESS was hampered and carried wider by SOLAR which shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of DON RICARDO. STRONG SUN made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SOLAR. On straightening, SOLAR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BOLD WIN. In the early part of the Straight, STRAIGHT VICTORY and DON RICARDO had difficulty obtaining clear running. At the 350 Metres, SAVUTE was carried wider by ZERO IN which at this time shifted to the outside of LIFELINE RAPIDE. At the 250 Metres, STRONG SUN, MOVE IT, WALKONTHEWILDSIDE, QUEST FOR LOVE and GRAND FIGHTER were hampered and carried wider by STRAIGHT VICTORY which got its head on the side and shifted out. The Stewards were satisfied K S Yu, the rider of STRAIGHT VICTORY, stopped riding and straightened his mount and therefore no action was taken. After the 200 Metres, GRAND FIGHTER was steadied away from the heels of QUEST FOR LOVE which shifted in. Also after the 200 Metres, WALKONTHEWILDSIDE was steadied away from the heels of QUEST FOR LOVE, then over the concluding stages hung in. When questioned, W M Lai (MOVE IT) acknowledged after the 600 Metres there was an opportunity for him to improve his position on the inside of DON RICARDO behind STRAIGHT VICTORY. He said he chose not to take advantage of this position as he had been instructed to make his run in the Home Straight towards the outside. He said therefore after straightening he shifted wider, commenced to improve his position and after the 300 Metres was momentarily held up on the heels of WALKONTHEWILDSIDE. He said after this he shifted to the outside of WALKONTHEWILDSIDE and MOVE IT closed the race off strongly. The Stewards will interview Trainer T W Leung in relation to his riding instructions. When questioned, Apprentice K T Yeung (LIFELINE RAPIDE) said he had been instructed from a favourable barrier to endeavour to begin well and if possible obtain a forward position in the run. Mr A T Millard, trainer of LIFELINE RAPIDE, confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said LIFELINE RAPIDE has not been beginning well in the majority of its races of recent times and as a consequence has not been able to obtain a forward position. He said at the horse's last two starts wide barriers have been an added disadvantage to the horse. Mr Millard did say LIFELINE RAPIDE had surprised him by being able to lead as he had anticipated the horse would travel somewhere in front of midfield. He said the betting support for LIFELINE RAPIDE was not stable inspired as he had informed the connections in his opinion the horse was only a place chance. Mr Millard was told he has a responsibility to ensure where possible horses trained by him are ridden and perform in a consistent manner. His explanation on this occasion was reported. Apprentice C K Tong (WONG'S SUCCESS) said from a wide barrier it was anticipated the horse would travel in a midfield position. He said however WONG'S SUCCESS which was resuming after having bled did not show early speed and got further back. He said WONG'S SUCCESS travelled wide in the run and in the Straight gave ground. He said in his opinion the manner in which WONG'S SUCCESS raced indicated it would derive benefit from today's race. WONG'S SUCCESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WONG'S SUCCESS after the race did not show any significant findings. ZERO IN and LIFELINE RAPIDE were sent for sampling.
