Racing Incident Report

GROWL was slow to begin. ALPHA MAIL was a little slow to begin and then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between SUNNY KING and FLORAL PEGASUS which began awkwardly and shifted out. For a considerable distance in the early stages, DOWN TOWN, which had been proving difficult to settle, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ROYAL DELIGHT which steadied the tempo after crossing to the fence. After the 1000 Metres, FLORAL PEGASUS was left racing without cover and then in the Straight hung in. Approaching the 800 Metres, WATCH WHAT HAPPENS, which had been proving difficult to settle when racing without cover, was allowed to stride forward to join the lead. After the 400 Metres, SURVEY SURVEY was hampered when bumped on several occasions by DOWN TOWN (O Doleuze) which was endeavouring to shift out to obtain clear running on the outside of SUPREME CLASS. O Doleuze was told there is a limit to how competitive a rider can be in obtaining clear running and whilst he did not breach that limit on this occasion, he nonetheless should exercise care. When questioned, B Prebble (SURVEY SURVEY) said in the early part of the Straight he elected to remain behind SUPREME CLASS. He said SURVEY SURVEY in the past had shown a good turn of foot and he felt today with the strong head wind in the Home Straight it would be beneficial for the horse to maintain cover as long as possible. He said after being hampered by DOWN TOWN, SURVEY SURVEY did not show its usual turn of foot. When questioned, O Doleuze said he had been instructed to follow the lead if the pace was satisfactory, however, if no other horse wished to lead, it would be acceptable for him to take that position. He said DOWN TOWN, which was racing over 1600 Metres for the first time today, began satisfactorily, shortly after the start he became aware ROYAL DELIGHT which had drawn wide on the track had been ridden to go forward and was clear of him, he therefore elected to allow ROYAL DELIGHT to cross to the fence in the lead as he felt the tempo of the race would be satisfactory. He said after crossing to the lead ROYAL DELIGHT was then steadied by its rider which in turn allowed SUNNY KING to then cross to the lead. He said after this happened the tempo of the race steadied even further and as a consequence DOWN TOWN travelled further back than anticipated. He did say in hindsight had he been aware the pace of the race would be steadied in the manner in which it was DOWN TOWN would have been better suited being ridden to maintain the lead. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of DOWN TOWN, said prior to the race he expressed concern that the race might be run at a slow tempo. He said because of this he asked O Doleuze to endeavour to lead. He did say however O Doleuze expressed concern to him in the Parade Ring that as DOWN TOWN was having its first start over 1600 Metres, it might be better suited ridden behind the leaders if the tempo of the race was satisfactory. After viewing the videos, Mr Yip said in his opinion O Doleuze would have been better served had he made more use of DOWN TOWN to hold a position inside ROYAL DELIGHT in the early stages rather than allowing that horse to immediately cross. The Stewards advised O Doleuze this ride in their opinion was not one of his better ones and having in mind the pre-race discussions he had had with Mr Yip, he should have made a greater effort in the early stages to follow the riding instructions of Mr Yip. SUNNY KING and BULLISH CASH was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SUNNY KING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying an irregular heart beat. Before being allowed to race again, SUNNY KING will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of BULLISH CASH after the race did not show any significant findings. FLORAL PEGASUS and VIVA MACAU were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported ROYAL DELIGHT had sustained an abrasion to the right hind Achilles tendon.
