Racing Incident Report

SNIPER was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, CHALLENGER and NATURAL ECHO lost ground when crowded for room between CAPTAIN BUNNY and SHOW BRAVELY which shifted in. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, SNIPER was steadied away from the heels of STAR PRODIGY which shifted out when proving difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of AMAZING CHOICE. After this, STAR PRODIGY continued to prove difficult to settle. In the early stages, SHOW BRAVELY travelled wide and without cover. In the early and middle stages, RED FORTUNE travelled wide and without cover. At about 20 Metres prior to the winning post, Apprentice C W Wong (SHOW BRAVELY) had the whip knocked from his hand by the whip of S K Sit (SPARKLE). Just prior to the winning post, NATURAL ECHO was checked when awkwardly placed between STAR PRODIGY and CAPTAIN BUNNY, both of which shifted ground. In the Straight, ACCELERATION hung out and proved difficult to ride. G Mossé (SPECTACULAR HIT) explained he was instructed if the pace of the race was moderate, it would be acceptable for him to improve his position mid-race. He said SPECTACULAR HIT is better suited when racing over a distance of further than 1800 Metres and in the past had shown it is not suited when being held up for a sprint home. He said because of the instructions he was issued and due to the moderate tempo of the race, at the 800 Metres he shifted his mount out to a three wide position and commenced to improve his position. He said as he gradually improved his position around the field, at the 500 Metres DOLPHIN STAR shifted out which resulted in him being carried wider. W M Lai (DOLPHIN STAR) explained near the 500 Metres his mount was travelling satisfactorily and as SPECTACULAR HIT commenced to improve around his outside, he noticed SHOW BRAVELY, the horse he had been following, came under pressure. He said therefore he shifted to the outside of SHOW BRAVELY to ensure he had clear running. He said after shifting out DOLPHIN STAR immediately came under pressure and commenced to give ground. RED FORTUNE and DOLPHIN STAR were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of RED FORTUNE after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, DOLPHIN STAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise. He also said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea and confirmed it to be a "roarer". Before being allowed to race again, DOLPHIN STAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AMAZING CHOICE and SPARKLE were sent for sampling.
