Racing Incident Report

SOU MA TAM was slow to begin. INSIDER began awkwardly. CHOICE AND CHANCE, which was slow to muster speed in the early stages, was ridden along to go forward and then travelled wide and without cover throughout. Near the 900 Metres, WIKI WIKI was checked when crowded for room inside EXPLODING which was carried in by HAPPY SUNDAY which after initially being carried in by KEEN SOUL (F Coetzee) got its head on the side and shifted in further away from that horse. In the circumstances, F Coetzee was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, TAIJI SPIRIT was checked when crowded for room between EXPLODING which shifted in slightly and INSIDER which shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of GLENEALY STAR which at this time was crowded for room inside PERFECT TREASURE. In the circumstances, no action was taken. After the 500 Metres, TAIJI SPIRIT was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of EXPLODING which at this time was carried in slightly by KEEN SOUL. On straightening, TAIJI SPIRIT became unbalanced when close to the heels of WIKI WIKI. Passing the 200 Metres, KEEN SOUL was carried wider by WIKI WIKI which shifted out to obtain clear running. At the 150 Metres, SHINING DRAGON was steadied away from the heels of KEEN SOUL which was giving ground. When questioned, O Doleuze (SHINING DRAGON) said he had been instructed because of the anticipated quick pace in the race and the fact that SHINING DRAGON was tonight dropping back in distance to ride the horse behind the pace if possible. He said SHINING DRAGON began well, however, shortly afterwards CHOICE AND CHANCE was hard ridden to improve on his inside. He said because he had been instructed not to lead on SHINING DRAGON, he allowed CHOICE AND CHANCE through and he then shifted SHINING DRAGON across behind those runners which had been ridden to obtain forward positions. He said approaching the turn at the 600 Metres he was following TAIJI SPIRIT and when that horse received interference, he was hampered in consequence. He said shortly after straightening he was disappointed for running between EXPLODING and TAIJI SPIRIT, he then shifted his mount in and rode it out to the end of the race. He said SHINING DRAGON closed the race off fairly. Mr C W Chang, trainer of SHINING DRAGON, said he had been disappointed with the manner in which the horse had finished off its most recent start when ridden to lead from the outside barrier over 1200 Metres. He said as the horse is now a 7 year old, he feels that it may not appreciate having to be made use of to lead. He said therefore the intention was for the horse which was having its second start over 1000 Metres tonight to obtain a position with cover. He said he believed too much use would have to have been made of SHINING DRAGON to maintain a forward position. He said it is intended to race SHINING DRAGON over 1200 Metres at its next start if possible. He said depending on the barrier draw and the anticipated pace of the race, SHINING DRAGON will be ridden in a similar manner unless the horse is able to obtain a more forward position without being used to do so. Mr Chang was told his explanation would be reported. KEEN SOUL and HAPPY SUNDAY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, KEEN SOUL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the right front leg and an endoscopic examination showed it to have a continuous displacement of the soft palate. Before being allowed to race again, KEEN SOUL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY SUNDAY after the race did not show any significant findings. GLENEALY STAR and INSIDER were sent for sampling.
