Racing Incident Report

TOP SPEED and SUPREME DRAGON were slow to begin. GALLANT KNIGHT was a little slow to begin, then lost further ground when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FREEBIRD. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres, FREEBIRD commenced to hang out. After the 1200 Metres, TATTENHALL DELIGHT, which was proving difficult to settle, was checked away from the heels of GALLANT KNIGHT. TATTENHALL DELIGHT continued to be difficult to settle for some distance after this and again was checked away from the heels of GALLANT KNIGHT near the 800 Metres. Near the 800 Metres, SUPREME DRAGON was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of TOP SPEED. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, JADE DANCER hung in and lost ground. As a consequence of this, GALLANT KNIGHT, which was following, also lost ground. For the major part of the race, JOYFUL YEARS travelled wide and without cover. W M Lai (DRAGON STRIDE) explained from a wide barrier he had been instructed to allow the horse to begin, then endeavour to find a position two wide. He said in the early stages a number of runners on his inside went forward, he therefore allowed DRAGON STRIDE to come across behind runners to find his position. He said making the turn after the 700 Metres he gradually improved his position to be in front of midfield prior to straightening. He said in the Straight DRAGON STRIDE finished the race off nicely. Mr T K Ng, trainer of DRAGON STRIDE, said he doubted whether DRAGON STRIDE had the natural speed to cross runners from an outside barrier. He said in his opinion when use is made of DRAGON STRIDE to obtain a forward position, the horse is not best suited. He did acknowledge two starts prior to today DRAGON STRIDE travelled in a forward position from a wide barrier when racing in Class 5. He said in his opinion the circumstances of that race were different from those of today. Z Purton (TATTENHALL DELIGHT) explained the horse’s poor performance was due to it over-racing in the early and middle stages and as a consequence it was not able to finish the race off. TATTENHALL DELIGHT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of TATTENHALL DELIGHT after the race did not show any significant findings. SUPER PEGASUS and JOYFUL YEARS were sent for sampling.
