Racing Incident Report
SUPREME WINNER was slow to begin.
GLACIER BLUE began only fairly and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between ROCKET PROUD and AFFECTION, both of which shifted ground.
LUFFY and HI MOLLY bumped at the start.
From a wide barrier, BET ON ME was taken across behind runners shortly after the start, however, for the majority of the race travelled wide and without cover.
Near the 1000 Metres, GREAT PEGASUS was steadied away from the heels of ROCKET PROUD which shifted in marginally.
Near the 900 Metres, HI MOLLY, which proved very difficult to settle for some distance, was severely checked when awkwardly placed at the heels of SIGHT LOVER. LUFFY, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of HI MOLLY in consequence and DIVINE DIYA, which was following LUFFY, was also hampered.
After the 800 Metres, ROCKET PROUD shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SOLAR BOY. After this, ROCKET PROUD travelled wide and without cover.
Rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, AFFECTION got its head on the side and lay out.
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view that an incident occurred over the concluding stages which cast doubt as to whether AFFECTION (B Prebble) should be declared the 2nd placegetter of the race. After viewing the videos, a protest/objection on behalf of the connections of GLACIER BLUE (O Doleuze), which finished 5th, was not proceeded with when the Stewards found that whilst AFFECTION shifted out over the concluding stages, resulting in GLACIER BLUE being checked when crowded for room, given the proximity of the incident to the winning post and the margin between the horses at the end of the race, the Stewards were of the opinion that there were not sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. Whilst it did not influence the decision of the Stewards in respect of this matter, O Doleuze did not lodge a protest/objection on behalf of the connections of GLACIER BLUE. At a subsequent inquiry, B Prebble pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. Following a submission from Jockey Prebble and having in mind the relevant circumstances, the Steward decided that the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races to be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday, 28 February 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Caulfield racemeeting to be held in Victoria, Australia on Saturday, 23 February 2013 to allow Jockey Prebble to fulfil a long standing engagement on GREEN MOON, the horse on which he won the most recent running of the Melbourne Cup. In addition, B Prebble was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday.
When questioned, T H So (SOLAR BOY) stated that he had been instructed to take up a forward position as is usual with that horse. He said after riding his mount along in the early stages, he shifted SOLAR BOY across after the 1000 Metres with the intention to clear SIGHT LOVER to his inside and obtain the lead on the rail. He said that as he was proceeding to cross SIGHT LOVER near the 850 Metres, he received a call from the rider of that horse alerting him that he was not clear to do so. He said for this reason he immediately shifted SOLAR BOY out to prevent causing interference to his inside. He said after this he considered riding SOLAR BOY along, but he felt that he would have had to make more use of the horse to clear SIGHT LOVER which was clearly established to his inside. T H So was advised that his explanation would be reported.
When questioned, W C Marwing stated that he had been instructed to obtain a position in 3rd, 4th or 5th with HI MOLLY but to ensure that the horse had cover. He said it was explained to him that the horse’s most recent runs, when leading, had been disappointing and it was felt that HI MOLLY may be better suited if being able to be ridden with cover. He said after beginning only fairly, HI MOLLY travelled into a forward position and prior to the 1000 Metres he attempted to steady the horse to allow SIGHT LOVER to cross. He said when he did this, HI MOLLY was inclined to charge and got its head up on a number of occasions when proving very difficult to settle. He said passing the 900 Metres he had to severely check HI MOLLY when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SIGHT LOVER and after this HI MOLLY continued to prove very difficult to settle when continuing to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of SIGHT LOVER. Trainer Y S Tsui stated that although HI MOLLY had raced well three starts ago when ridden in the lead, the horse had subsequently been disappointing when giving ground in the Straight after leading. He said for this reason he engaged a stronger rider today in the hope that the horse would be able to settle with cover and then finish off the race. He added that having in mind the manner in which HI MOLLY raced today, it is his intention, if possible, to bring the horse back in distance in the hope that a stronger run race would allow HI MOLLY to settle better if able to be ridden with cover which would be his preference. In the opinion of the Stewards, the racing manners of HI MOLLY were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HI MOLLY will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that ROCKET PROUD had lost its left hind plate. Also after the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on ROCKET PROUD at the request of Trainer C S Shum. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ROCKET PROUD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Following the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on DIVINE DIYA at the request of Trainer P O’Sullivan. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea.
A veterinary inspection of LUFFY after the race did not show any significant findings.
GLACIER BLUE, DIVINE DIYA and AFFECTION were sent for sampling.
