When questioned, rider stated that the instructions were to endeavour to lead and obtain a position on the rail as his mount races best in that position. He said in the early stages when unable to cross a runner he elected to race outside that horse but in the Home Straight his mount hung in and proved difficult to ride out. He added that over the concluding stages when he was concerned that his mount may shift in and crowd the running of that runner he was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount to avoid causing interference. He said as a consequence he was unable to ride his mount out to the finish of the event. Post-race vet inspection did not show any significant findings – Race 288.
