S1-1 Woodcote Stakes (Wally Pyrah)

This is the most historic two-year-old race at Epsom, and was first run in 1794. There will be plenty of support for the William Haggis-trained HAIKBIDIAC who will be ridden by Ryan Moore. The trainer has been quoted as saying that while he is out of an UNFUWAIN mare, who was a stayer, he is by the speedy KODIAC and is one of the trainer’s more mature two-year-olds and definitely one of the best of his early season youngsters. Having won at Doncaster on his debut, and then finishing third to STEVENTON STAR at York – winner rated as one of the best from Richard Hannon’s yard – that form looks very strong, and the extra 200m will suit.

NEIGHBOTHER is from the Richard Fahey stable, and having won at Warwick recently – sharp track similar to Epsom – should be suited by the downhill gradients. Beat a horse called MIDNITE ANGEL there, and the runner-up subsequently won by seven lengths at Windsor. The odds board should prove a valuable guide to his chances.

Trainer Richard Hannon who is looking for his third success in the race, relies on THUNDER STRIKE who has won both his races so far without being extended. Both wins were over the minimum trip, but his breeding suggests he will be better suited by the extra 200m.

Another trainer with plenty of success in this race, is ex-England footballer Mick Channon who has won the race three times already, and has booked William Buick for his Bath winner RIVERBOAT SPRINGS, who won drawing right away in a 1,000m event at Bath, and should like the extra distance.

Keep an eye on COOL BAHAMIAN who surprised when winning first up at Lingfield. That's not the whole story though. The rider dropped his whip in the last 100m but still managed to win by a neck. If he hadn’t dropped the ‘persuader’ he would have won by considerably more. Maybe a long shot.

Anything that Northern trainer Mark Johnston runs has to be respected. He relies on IFWECAN who won a decent maiden race at Ascot, despite hanging alarmingly in the closing stages, and then jinking past the winning line and losing his jockey. Obviously he is a horse with plenty of quirks but nevertheless talented.

Finally trainer Gay Kelleway has booked French wonderboy Pierre-Charles Boudot for newcomer SOUL OF MOTION. This will be his first ride in Britain, and will give him a taste of the undulating track before he gets aboard French challenger OCOVANGO in the Investec Derby.

Selections:
1. HAIKBIDIAC, 7. NEIGHBOTHER, 10. THUNDER STRIKE & 5. IFWECAN

S1-2 Coronation Cup (David Duggan)

Only five runners are going to the post for this race and many will expect history to indeed be made with ST NICHOLAS ABBEY bidding for a third success in this Group 1. Aidan O’Brien’s six-year-old showed his current well-being when landing the Dubai Sheema Classic on his most recent outing over this same trip, he had a somewhat mixed season in 2012, with his only win was in fact this race, despite that record he is very much at home here at Epsom and unless something unforeseen happens he will land this prize.

The well-travelled DUNADEN must also be considered here he was third most recently in the Prix Ganay over a probable inadequate 2,000m, with the likely strong pace being made by the other O’Brien’s runner CHAMONIX he will certainly be keeping on well in the closing stages here and is likely to give the favourite most to do.

Of the others JOSHUA TREE has not been the easiest horse to place and would need to improve on his last run at York to land this prize, whilst CHAPTER SEVEN has in all probability a bit too much leeway to make up on official figures to trouble the principals here.

Selections:
5. ST NICHOLAS ABBEY, 3. DUNADEN, 4. JOSHUA TREE & 1. CHAMONIX

S1-3 ‘Dash’ (Handicap) (Wally Pyrah)

Statistics have played an important part in finding the winner of this race, with traditionally a high barrier number essential, as there is a strip of ground near the stands rail which seems significantly faster than the centre of the track to the far rail. With ground conditions likely to be good or good to soft, it will be even more important to have a middle to high barrier number, despite last year’s winner STONE OF FOLCA being a stat buster from barrier 2. Conditions were good to firm last year, and will be completely different on Saturday.

Up to last year, no horse drawn lower than 8 had made the first three since 2005, and another important statistic to bear in mind is that 7 of the last 10 winners and 54% of placed horses were aged six or older. History also shows that three-year-old runners have been sunk without trace since 1996 – a record of zero from 30.

DUKE OF FIRENZE will probably head the odds market, with trainer Sir Michael Stoute saddling a rare runner in this race. The four-year-old finished a creditable fifth in a rich and competitive handicap at York recently, having previously won in a good time – with FAIR VALUE 3rd – at Goodwood at the beginning of May. He looks the type, given a good dose of luck, to play an important role at the finish.

Good course form is a particular strong pointer to finding winners in sprint handicaps at Epsom, so last year’s ‘Dash’ winner STONE OF FOLCA has to be on the short-list. Trainer John Best’s speedster won off a 3lbs lower mark than he carries on Saturday, and stopped the clock in a winning time of 53.69secs which was just four hundredth of a second slower than the record achieved in 1960. Significantly his record of two wins have come on his seasonal reappearance which shows he goes best when fresh.

FAIR VALUE is another who has excellent course and distance credentials – a winner and second in two visits to Epsom – and confirmed he would be in prime condition for the ‘Dash’ with a third on his reappearance behind DUKE OF FIRENZE at Goodwood recently.

Another Epsom ‘standing dish’ is CAPTAIN DUNNE who after losing out in the photo in this race in 2009, won the ‘Dash’ two years later from a 10lbs higher mark in the handicap. He ran an encouraging trial for this race again, when beaten narrowly at Chester recently, and looks an obvious contender despite advancing years.

LONG AWAITED only finished 13th in the ‘Dash’ last season, but had excuses, being badly hampered at a crucial stage. He subsequently showed that form was all wrong when winning a 1,000m handicap at Epsom in August with several of his rivals including STONE OF FOLCA, who had beaten him in June behind. He has an excellent record when running first-up and must go close with a trouble free run.

Globe-trotting sprinter HUMIDOR finished fourth to ORTENSIA in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes last season and would have a first-rate chance on that form, despite top-weight in the handicap. He was only beaten a length by SPIRIT QUARTZ off level weights in April, and then finished seventh in a Group 3 – beaten only two lengths – after missing the start at Longchamp earlier this month.

Globe-trotting sprinter HUMIDOR finished fourth to ORTENSIA in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes last season and would have a first-rate chance on that form, despite top-weight in the handicap. CONFESSIONAL finished second to his stablemate CAPTAIN DUNNE in this race in 2011, before coming fifth last year from a bad barrier. He clearly acts well at Epsom, and although he hasn’t won for over a year, has run several good races in defeat, notably in Group and Listed company. He looks the type to include in all exotic bets on the race.

Selections:
13. LONG AWAITED, 12. CAPTAIN DUNNE, 9. DUKE OF FIRENZE & 10. STONE OF FOLCA

  • Since 1986, the Derby winner has come from barrier 10 seven times

The most famous 2,400m race in the European calendar and the race that lends itself to the Derby name worldwide.

DAWN APPROACH comes here unbeaten and bids to emulate previous recent winners of the English 2,000 Guineas CAMELOT and SEA THE STARS and complete the Newmarket and Epsom double. It is hard not to like the son of NEW APPROACH himself a winner of this race, he was devastating at Newmarket over 1,600m putting all of five lengths between him and the rest of the field. Many have questioned his ability to get this distance but his lazy running style should give him every chance, the one query I have is that in several of his races when he does hit the front he is inclined to idle and edge into the middle of the track, this I feel could be his Achilles’ heel at Epsom but he is sure to go close. It must also be noted that DAWN APPROACH was not considered Epsom Derby material by his trainer Jim Bolger in the early part of this season and was supplemented for the race at the insistence of owner Sheikh Mohammed.

Aidan O’Brien fields a team of 5, BATTLE OF MARENGO a winner of his last five starts and winner of a recognized Derby trial at Leopardstown, he is clearly very useful and should enter calculations he has won his last five starts in good fashion.

RULER OF THE WORLD unraced at two has won his last only two starts to date including a very impressive win albeit in a small field at Chester over today’s 2,400m. As a half-brother to the top class DUKE OF MARMALADE, he could prove best of the quintet as he is clearly progressing and will like what could be a soft surface.

There is an international flavour to the race in the shape of CHOPIN, a supplementary entry and a winner of two of his three starts, he will however need to improve.

The most interesting runner and my idea of the winner is OCOVANGO for master trainer Andre Fabre in France. OCOVANGO has 3 wins out of 3 starts and follows an identical path to the stablemate POUR MOI, a winner of this race in 2011. The son of the now deceased MONSON was most impressive when landing the Prix Greffulhe over 2,000m on soft ground and indeed has had a gallop around this demanding Epsom course in a recent press morning at the track. Fabre is a master at preparing horses for a race of this nature and has always maintained he is the right type for the Derby and that in itself is a good enough reason to think he might just trouble DAWN APPROACH.

This is a good renewal of a true championship race, it would appear the ground conditions are likely to be on the slow side of good as the UK has experienced a lot of rain in recent days, on that basis my call will be for a victory for France and Andre Fabre, bidding to emulate POUR MOI.

Selections:
11. OCOVANGO, 3. DAWN APPROACH, 12. RULER OF THE WORLD & 1. BATTLE OF MARENGO

Double Selections (60 unit bets):
S1-3:   Multiple – 13. LONG AWAITED, 9. DUKE OF FIRENZE, 10. STONE OF FOLCA, 12. CAPTAIN DUNNE, 2. HUMIDOR & 16. FAIR VALUE

S1-4:   Banker – 11. OCOVANGO
Selections – 3. DAWN APPROACH, 12. RULER OF THE WORLD & 1. BATTLE OF MARENGO

S1-5
Zebra Stakes (Handicap) (David Duggan)

A typically competitive handicap to be run over the Derby course with several notable runners.

Mark Johnson has a couple of interesting runners here and the filly by MANDURO, SCATTER DICE makes plenty of appeal. She was undoubtedly disappointing on her last start at Ascot trailing home in last place but something was clearly amiss there, she is much better judged on a good third at Salisbury over 2,800m where she led the field only to fade in the closing stages, a drop back to this 2,400m will suit much better, and it is interesting that she managed a fair fourth over this course and distance in April.

DUKE OF CLARENCE has been kept busy of late and has had four starts winning at Windsor over 2,000m and then running really well to be second to USTURA when stepped up to 2,200m at the same track, this is his first attempt at this distance but he too is clearly in good form and merits respect.

RIGHT STEP represents Alan Jarvis here and his promising fourth recently to SWINGING SULTAN at Haydock over 2,200m marks him down as a contender too. He has won a valuable race at Epsom over 2,000m bodes well for his chances today, the trip should be no problem as he has winning form over 3,200m, with his low weight he must be considered.

When discussing RIGHT STEP and his chance the runner up in his Epsom triumph reopposes here SIRVINO the mount of Ryan Moore. Both these horses are quite closely matched, SIRVINO is coming here on the back of a very good win at York over 2,400m so is clearly in good form, I would imagine once again he will run really well, although as his profile would suggest he is a slightly in and out performer.

Selections:
2. SCATTER DICE, 6. DUKE OF CLARENCE, 11. RIGHT STEP & 4. SIRVINO

S1-6
Voyage Stakes (Handicap) (David Duggan)

SEEKING MAGIC is trained by Clive Cox an upwardly mobile trainer. He has had three starts this season and was a ready winner at Leicester two starts back over 1,200m travelling well and asserting close home. He was not at all disgraced in his next outing over 1,200m at Newbury when third in a better race. He is ready for this task and will have no problem with this trip he is already a winner over 1,400m.

CREW CUT has been kept busy as many sprinters are in the UK and rattled off a couple of wins on the polytrack at Kempton over 1,200m recently his subsequent two runs returning to turf have been fine notably a staying on third at Ascot over 1,200m in mid-May, the uphill climb here at Epsom may well play to his strengths.

The well-bred GANDALAK has proved to be a shrewd purchase from France by David O’Meara’s a rising star of the training ranks in the UK. The son of OASIS DREAM has wins at Newcastle 1,200m and Musselburgh 1,400m to his name already, he seems to act on most ground and whilst improvement is needed he can certainly be considered.

Finally BLUE JACK is worth a look. Trained by Stuart Williams in Newmarket, he ran a nice race when finishing midfield recently at Newmarket over 1,000m, finding that a bit too sharp. He is better judged on his good second over 1,200m at Windsor when beaten only a neck, he could figure in a very open looking affair.

Selections: 6. SEEKING MAGIC, 10. 3. CREW CUT, GANDALAK & 14. BLUE JACK
Treble Selections (12 unit bets):
S1-4:Multiple    3. DAWN APPROACH & 12. RULER OF THE WORLD
S1-5:Multiple    2. SCATTER DICE & 6. DUKE OF CLARENCE
S1-6:Multiple    6. SEEKING MAGIC, 10. CREW CUT & 3. GANDALAK

UK & Ireland Expert - Wendyll Woods
Wendyll Woods began his riding career in Hong Kong as an apprentice jockey to trainer Lawrence Fownes in 1983. He became Fownes' retained jockey from 1987/88 to end of 2001/02 when he was retained by his younger brother Sean Woods. During his Hong Kong racing career, he rode an impressive 3,897 Hong Kong races, riding 321 winners with a winning percentage of 8.2%, including the Queen Mother Memorial Cup with CARACOLER in 2002. Woods also spent five years racing in England where he won several key races including Heron Stakes and Princess Elizabeth Stakes. He currently runs a stud farm with his older brother in England.

S1-1
Woodcote Stakes

This is a fast and furious race for 2-y-o run over 1,200m which places a premium upon balance for these young and inexperienced horses. Therefore it is often important to keep an eye on the more precocious juveniles, especially those that have already won a race, plenty of whom line up here. Therefore in an open looking race with plenty of runners open to further improvement, the selection is THUNDER STRIKE, the runner of champion jockey Richard Hughes and trainer Richard Hannon. Unbeaten in two starts and sent off a strong favourite on both occasions, this son of SAKHEE’S SECRET showed a great deal of professionalism in winning. The step up in trip is sure to suit and he looks a strong contender.

The drier the ground the better for the William Haggas trained HAIKBIDIAC, who won on debut on good to firm ground, though he was only able to manage to finish third last time out. However that day he looked sorely in need of a step up in trip, so the 1,200m here are likely to suit, especially if the ground dries out.

RIVERBOAT SPRINGS is an interesting runner for last year’s winning trainer Mick Channon. He made a good impression on his only start at Bath, running out a ready winner over this trip. The form of that effort has been massively boosted with the runner-up subsequently winning. The son of BUSHRANGER looks to have plenty of improvement in him.

A final one to note is the Mark Johnston trained IFWECAN who has twice been sent off a well-backed favourite and is sure to run his race. Too green on debut, he improved to win last time out and is likely to set a stern gallop from the front here.

Selections: 10. THUNDER STRIKE, 4. HAIKBIDIAC, 8. RIVERBOAT SPRINGS & 5. IFWECAN

S1-2
Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup is one of the most sought-after Group 1s of the year and this season the top-class ST NICHOLAS ABBEY attempts to win the race for an historic third time in a row. In what looks a weaker field than those he has previously beaten, especially with only the 5 runners, he cannot be taken on and looks banker material. This season he has already put up arguably his best performance in winning the Dubai Sheema Classic, beating the Japan Cup winner in GENTILDONNA, a Hardwicke winner in AWAIT THE DAWN and the Hong Kong Vase winner in DUNADEN amongst others. He was ridden from the front that day to make use of his stamina and expect him here to race prominently here in behind the strong pace that is sure to be set by one of the Aidan O’Brien pacemakers. His trainer has always said that he is one of the most talented horses he has trained and the fact that he has been kept in training as a 6-y-o instead of being sent to stud is a tip in itself that they expect to win more Group 1s this season.

As mentioned DUNDADEN was behind ST NICHOLAS ABBEY in Dubai and it would be a surprise to see him reverse that form here. However he is next highest on international ratings and looks a likely contender to fill the quinella spot as he is likely to run his race yet again.

Most likely to follow them home is JOSHUA TREE who has done most of his recent running internationally and is a consistent performer at this level. Ryan Moore is 1 from 3 on-board which is a big advantage however the suspicion remains that he may need further than this to be seen to best effect.

Selections:
5. ST NICHOLAS ABBEY, 3. DUNADEN & 4. JOSHUA TREE

S1-3
‘Dash’ (Handicap)

This is the fastest 1,000m in the world and last year’s winner STONE OF FOLCA returns having not been seen since September last year. This should be no problem as he goes particularly well fresh, but the danger lies in the strength in depth of his competitors, headed by David Barron’s LONG AWAITED. He has been gradually moving up the handicap but his last victory 3 runs ago came over this course and distance and the return to the Downs should bring about further improvement from this 5-y-o. Richard Hughes returns to the saddle and he can steer him home to improve further upon his recent form.

In what is an open looking race, look to the progressive DUKE OF FIRENZE to fill the runners-up spot. Sir Michael Stoute can continue his excellent start to the season with this son of PIVOTAL who has enjoyed to the step down in trip to 1,000m. There is a fear he may be outpaced earlier on, but expect to see him staying on strongly at the end past tiring horses to run into the places. This is only his 11th start and he looks a sprinter to keep on side.

Most interesting of all the runners is perhaps JIROFT, who is having his first run for Robert Cowell and is a newcomer to UK. This 6-y-o has been running in Italy and so it is difficult to tie in his form with the rest of the field, but in recent seasons Robert Cowell has proved himself at master at training and improving sprinters so it would be dangerous to rule out him doing the trick again. He is an interesting runner to keep on side, especially if there is any money in the UK market for him.

A final one to note is AJJAADD who won last time out over course and distance. He is fairly exposed now but enjoys it around here and any ease in the ground is likely to suit. He has an impressive 25% winning strike-rate (9 wins from 36 starts).

Selections:
13. LONG AWAITED, 9. DUKE OF FIRENZE, 4. JIROFT & 6. AJJAADD

S1-4
Investec Derby

This year the market is dominated by one horse: DAWN APPROACH. Son of 2008 Derby winner NEW APPROACH, this Jim Bolger-trained colt was unbeaten as a 2-y-o, including victories in the National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, his reappearance this season was eagerly anticipated and he didn’t disappoint. He was imperious back at Newmarket in the English 2,000 Guineas, running out a comfortable 5 lengths winner and recording an international rating of 125, which would have been good enough to have won 16 of the last 17 renewals (the exception being FRANKEL’s year!). However, although he was staying on strongly that day, question marks remain over his ability to stay this extended trip, even though his father is a Derby winner himself. However even if the trip does the limit of his stamina, expect him to outclass his rivals and be confirmed as the top 3-y-o over all trips.

The battle in behind for the places looks tight and the Ballydoyle yard of Aidan O’Brien is sure to send out a strong battalion of runners, chief of whom may prove to be BATTLE OF MARENGO, who has long looked the first choice of the powerful Irish yard. Unbeaten in his last 5 starts, including victories in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes and Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes, he has only been workmanlike so far, but looks certain to relish the step up in trip to 2,409m. He has also won on both good and heavy ground, so is sure to handle the conditions no matter which way the weather turns. He keeps getting better with every start and is sure to put in another top performance here and the fact that he is the choice of stable jockey Joseph O’Brien emphasises how highly he is thought of.

However despite this I think another Ballydoyle entrant in RULER OF THE WORLD, who won one of the recognised trials in the Chester Vase, may prove to be the best from the O’Brien yard. He looks a thorough stayer and so the stronger they go early the better his chances. This will be only his third start, so he doesn’t have the same experience as the other market leaders, but he has been very impressive so far and the fact is we still don’t know just how good he is; Expect him to run a big race, especially with the world-class Ryan Moore taking the ride.

If you’re looking for a live outsider then perhaps take a look at the David Wachman trained GALILEO ROCK who could perhaps run into a place and help pay a big dividend. Internationally rated 106, he wouldn’t have to improve that much to get involved and although he only came third last time out, he did beat Dante Stakes winner LIBERTARIAN that day by 8 lengths and so on that form has every right to get involved here.

Selections:
3. DAWN APPROACH, 12. RULER OF THE WORLD, 1. BATTLE OF MARENGO & 6. GALILEO ROCK
Double Trio Selections (9 unit bets):
S1-3:   Banker - 13. LONG AWAITED
Selections– 9. DUKE OF FIRENZE, 4. JIROFT & 6. AJJAADD
S1-4:   Banker - 3. DAWN APPROACH
Selections- 12. RULER OF THE WORLD, 1. BATTLE OF MARENGO & 6. GALILEO ROCK

S1-5
Zebra Stakes (Handicap)

This is a very tricky looking contest and a chance is takes on JOHN BISCUIT, the mount of leading female jockey Hayley Turner. He is a very quirky individual whose undoubted ability is often undone by his somewhat intractable nature. However what makes him interesting is that he goes particularly well at Epsom with 2 wins from 5 runs. Although he looks to need some help from the handicapper, it would be no surprise if he runs another good race round here.

DUKE OF CLARENCE is a very consistent horse who should have no problem in being competitive having only been beaten a nose by an unexposed Godolphin horse at Windsor last time. That was his first trial at the trip having won four times over a mile and a quarter previously. He could take up a prominent position in the race and if positioned well by Richard Hughes, he could be up to winning this.

The rest of the contenders are perhaps headed by Sheikhzayedroad, who continues to look progressive. This will be his first attempt at 2,409m, but on drying ground that is sure to play in his favour. Although beaten last time out in a three-runner affair, the ground was very soft that day and so he can be forgiven. He looks to have the talent to defy a mark of 92 and as only a 4-y-o has the scope for more improvement than some of his rivals here.

It will be interesting to see if SIRVINO is able to build upon his victory at York last time out as he has always had ability. However he seemed to have lost his way in the last couple of seasons, before bouncing back over this trip at the York Dante meeting. Ryan Moore takes the ride and it is encouraging that he has finished second at Epsom before.

Selections:
7. JOHN BISCUIT, 6. DUKE OF CLARENCE, 3. SHEIKHZAYEDROAD & 4. SIRVINO

S1-6
Voyage Stakes(Handicap)

In a competitive end to the card, it may be worth siding with the hat-trick seeking GABBIANO. He will undoubtedly need some luck in running as he is hold up performer, but the chances of this are better with the very talented apprentice Robert Tart on-board. He has been raised 10lb for his last two victories, but the manner of this wins suggest that a mark of 82 should not be beyond him here.

SEEKING MAGIC brings some very strong handicap form to the table having finished third last time out off a mark of 93. It may be that he is held of that mark, but he is very consistent at this level and looks a likely place candidate.

DR RED EYE has won his last three starts, but all over 1,400m. However Billy Cray gets on particularly well with the horse and has won 4 times on him. Expect him to set off in front at a blistering pace and he may prove difficult to peg back, negating the drop in trip.

Also keep an eye on CREW CUT who has translated his good winter form on the All-weather to the turf, placed in his last two runs, including an excellent third last time out at Ascot. He is a solid handicapper and continues to run well despite looking held for win purposes off his current mark.

Selections:
12. GABBIANO, 2. DR RED EYE, 6. SEEKING MAGIC & 10. CREW CUT
Treble Selections (27 unit bets):
S1-4:Multiple - 3. DAWN APPROACH, 12. RULER OF THE WORLD & 1. BATTLE OF MARENGO
S1-5:Multiple - 7. JOHN BISCUIT, 6. DUKE OF CLARENCE & 3. SHEIKHZAYEDROAD
S1-6:Multiple - 12. GABBIANO, 2. DR RED EYE & 6. SEEKING MAGIC
