Grosser Preis von Berlin S1 - 2, 14/08/2022, Sunday Post Time 20:00

1

Alter Adler

Three times winner in 12 starts, reliable and with a stunning front running victory in Baden-Baden earlier in the year. Trainer reportedly unhappy with ride in latest race in Hamburg. Could get his own way up front in this small field.

2

Ardakan

A grey, he narrowly won the G2 Italian Derby over 2200m as favourite and quietly fancied in the German edition where he finished midfield. Receives weight-for-age and chance on ratings, but still with something to prove.

3

Assistent

Supplemented, he has progressive form and was a good fourth in the G1 German Derby in Hamburg. Fought hard but just beaten in a Listed event at Clairefontaine late last month. His ambitious owners hope he can manage a G1 place on Sunday.

4

Nastaria

Supplemented on the back of a 4.5l victory in a 1900m Listed event in Dresden last Sunday. Second place in a G3 here earlier reads well as subsequent German Oaks winner was behind her. Not guaranteed to say this trip on breeding and this could be a step too far.

5

Nerik

Second start for his owner, representing a top-yard. Needed five races to win his maiden earlier this year, and has not won above Listed level. Finished 5th in German Derby latest and has a chance on ratings but earlier winning form has not been boosted.

6

Northern Ruler

Was mainly campaigned in France last season, with one win at Group 3 level. Yet to win at higher level in two starts in Germany but fine second making a belated start to the season in Hamburg five weeks ago. The Arc is the aim and owner and trainer (fresh from winning the German Oaks last weekend) are quietly confident.

7

Rebel’s Romance

Supplemented, this progressive four-year-old has won six of his nine starts, most recently in a G3 at Goodwood. Looks like a strong stayer so could push the pace. Much respected.

8

Virginia Storm

Winner of a sole race, a maiden 2yo on his lifetime debut in 2020. Highly tried in five races this term, but keeps surprising positively in defeat (including a good third behind Arc winner Torquator Tasso in Hamburg, beating Alter Adler) and should give another good account with conditions expected to suit.
