Flemington Racecourse – Track Analysis (Lightning Stakes Day):

Flemington Racecourse is the headquarters for racing in the city of Melbourne and is located approximately six kilometres from the city’s CBD. As a racecourse, it’s renowned for its vast expanses and long home straight, by Australian racing standards, which in theory means that every horse gets their opportunity to win there. Racing anti-clockwise on turf, the main course at Flemington has a circumference of 2312m and a home straight of 450m in length. It also has a 1200m straight course which all sprint races are run on.

Nine turf races from the Lightning Stakes Day will be simulcast to Hong Kong.

The feature race, G1 Black Caviar Lightning is a true test of speed and is run over 1000m on the straight course at Flemington. Last year, the race was won by HOME AFFAIRS, who settled up on the speed and held on to beat his stablemate NATURE STRIP, although he endured a tough run due to being severely hampered at the start, with a gap to EDUARDO in third. The field came up the middle part of the track on that occasion, however, it is likely that only a small field will contest the Black Caviar Lightning, therefore, tactics and race tempo will play a more important role in how the race is run compared to the track pattern.

The Black Caviar Lightning is one of three races scheduled to be run on the straight course at Flemington, with the Listed Talindert Stakes over 1100m and the World Pool Handicap over 1200m the other two sprints on the famous Flemington straight.

Four of the races being simulcast from Flemington on Lightning Stakes Day are over 1400m. Three of them are G3 races, including The Vanity, Tony Bourke Memorial and CS Hayes Stakes, also the Listed HKJC Elms Handicap. This is one of the trickiest starting points on the course as the field jump from the chute and then quickly face a long, gradual turn before entering the home straight; therefore, inside barrier draws are an advantage in races over this distance at Flemington. Likewise, inside draws will also be an advantage for the runners in the Australian Childhood Foundation Trophy over 1600m, given that races over this distance also begin from a chute and face a constant, gradual turn prior to entering the home straight.

On the other hand, the 2000m starting point for the Asian Racing Federation Trophy is the fairest start at Flemington and one of the fairest on any racecourse in Australia. In races over this distance, horses have a straight run of approximately 600m before they face the first turn, consequently, they have plenty of time to find their preferred position in running.

The rail will be in the true position for Lightning Stakes Day and dry conditions are forecast leading into the meeting, consequently, it is anticipated that the races will be run on a good track.
