Expert Column for New Zealand Derby (S1) (Brett Davis)

S1-1     New Zealand Derby

SHARP 'N' SMART is an emerging star and the standout runner in this year’s edition of the New Zealand Derby. The 3YO son of REDWOOD ventured to Australia last spring capturing the G1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, before a gallant defeat in the G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington over 2,500m. He returned this campaign with a courageous defeat in the G1 Thornton Mile at Trentham on a heavy track, before winning the G1 Herbie Dyke Stakes here at Te Rapa in incredible fashion. Team Rogerson have him ticking over perfectly for the big occasion and he’s drawn to receive the run of the race.

WAITAK has enjoyed an ideal preparation going in to the 2,400m classic and should find himself amongst the finish. He gave every indication in the G2 2,100m Avondale Guineas that he’ll benefit from the additional 300m, with that event run as an unsuitable stop start affair. Staying appears his forte and the long homestraight at Te Rapa, a track at which he’s proven, allows him to build continuously towards the line.

DYNASTIC is on the quick back up after winning a strong BM75 at Matamata last weekend against the older horses. The Mark Walker stable have stated during the week the horse is perfect, and the short break between run’s shouldn’t be a concerning factor. They also suggested, it’ll take a very good horse to beat SHARP ‘N’ SMART. With that all being said, plus a touch of luck needed from a wide and tricky gate, a great challenge is ahead if he’s to win.

DESERT LIGHTNING won the G2 Avondale Guineas over 2,100m when narrowly defeating WAITAK and the luckless WARSAW. He was given a peach of a ride by jockey Vinnie Colgan before unleashing a powerful sharp turn of acceleration to win. Stepping to 2,400m is a deeper hardcore staying test but if he handles that pressure, and produces his hard finish, he’s a genuine winning prospect.

MARK TWAIN is a runner of interest that’ll go around as an outside chance and at a price. The son of Melbourne Cup winner SHOCKING has displayed progressive ability in two wins to date, and is now screaming out for the longer journey. He’ll settle back in the field before working into the race during the later stages. If he copes with the intensity he can give a sight.

SELECTIONS: 1. SHARP 'N' SMART, 4. WAITAK, 3. DYNASTIC, 2. DESERT LIGHTNING & 8. MARK TWAIN
