Te Rapa Racecourse – Track Analysis (New Zealand Derby):

The New Zealand Derby is one of the most prestigious races held in New Zealand and has been won by superstars like BONECRUSHER, THE PHANTOM CHANCE, XCELLENT, SILENT ACHIEVER and MONGOLIAN KHAN through its history, which dates back to 1875. The 2400m course and distance of the race is regarded as providing a true stamina test for the classic generation of 3YO’s and boasts prizemoney this year of NZ$1-million (HK$4.89-million).

The race is usually held at Auckland’s premier racecourse, Ellerslie, however, with that track currently closed due to renovations, it will be held at Te Rapa Racecourse, which is located over 120km south of Auckland in the Waikato region, well known for its breeding and training establishments.

Te Rapa is a symmetrical left-handed racecourse with a circumference of 1788m and is a flat course with a sand-based turf surface. The Derby field will begin from the 2400m chute, which is also used for races like the Waikato Cup. From that starting point, the runners have approximately a 700m run before they get to the first turn, giving the large field a reasonable opportunity to find their preferred spot in running. Once the field enters the back straight, they have a run of over 500m before they begin to make their approach for the home turn. Like Sha Tin, Te Rapa boasts a long home straight of 420m, thus giving the field the best chance to make up the necessary ground that they may have to.

The rail will be in the true position for New Zealand Derby, which should see the track race fairly.

At this stage, dry conditions are forecast leading into the meeting, consequently, it is anticipated that the races will be run on a good track. As always though, the earlier races on the program prior to the simulcast will be useful to take note of for the most up to date track and weather conditions, as well as any track patterns that may emerge through the meeting, given that the Derby will be one of the later races on the card.
