Expert Column for WATC Derby (S2) (Brett Davis)

S2-1 WATC Derby

SHE’S FIT has already proven herself over 2,400m following an all the way win in the G3 W.A. Oaks. The early markets have her equal top pick with AWESOME JOHN, but it’s an event where numerous runners are capable and the right jockey decisions shall likely decide the outcome. Only three fillies have claimed the Oaks and Derby double since 2011, so it’s not an easy task, but the small field and inside barrier are extremely beneficial.

ANOTHER CHINO arrives to his greatest challenge in explicit form following three consecutive wins at Ascot, two at Listed level. In the recent Listed Melvista Stakes over 2,200m he produced his now customary hard finish to gather up the leaders through the final stages, further suggesting the rise to 2,400m shall accordingly suit. The handicappers have him rated the second best horse in the field and that’ll hold him in good stead.

AWESOME JOHN is trained by John O’Shea and the only visitor to contest this year’s Derby from an interstate jurisdiction. The Sydney galloper finished third in G2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill recently, with the runner up MAJOR BEEL going on to win the G1 Australian Derby at its next start. That form line now reads incredibly strong, so should he run out the 2,400m then he’s the horse they all must defeat.

DEMOLISH is raced, trained and to be ridden by a member of the Parnham family and they’re a big chance of winning gold. The son of RICH ENUFF has been a warrior in defeat at his past three starts with the law of averages now on his side. With a faultless lead up, ideal barrier draw and honest approach he’s a genuine chance of taking home the prize.

PLAYHOUSE PATRON has enjoyed a solid preparation leading into the Derby and is right on song to run well. His closing effort in the Listed Melvista Stakes behind ANOTHER CHINO and DEMOLISH was superb, after producing the best closing splits of the race. A small field and potential tactical battle could be difficult to overcome but he’s ideally placed stepping to 2,400m.

SELECTIONS:5. SHE’S FIT, 1. ANOTHER CHINO, 3. AWESOME JOHN, 2. DEMOLISH & 4. PLAYHOUSE PATRON
