San Isidro Racecourse – Track Analysis (Gran Premio Latinoamericano):
San Isidro Racecourse, property of the Jockey Club Argentino, was inaugurated on December 8, 1935. It is, without a doubt, one of the largest and most important racecourses in the Americas, and is located 22 kilometers north of the Buenos Aires city, occupying an area of 148 hectares.
Its turf track is 2783m long by 45m wide, and allows for 1000 meters events without elbows. A diagonal offers the option of running without any curve up to 1400 meters and the extension of the opposite straight makes it possible to run races over 2400 meters with a single elbow.
The sand track has an extension of 2590 meters with the main elbow, while with an internal elbow its length is reduced to 2200 meters. The width of the track is 31m, allowing the participation of up to 24 horses per race, a number that varies depending on the distance of the competition.
The San Isidro Racecourse is also one of the most modern equestrian venues in South America.
In the month of December, the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini takes place, the most important event around Argentina's calendar.
San Isidro Racecourse has already hosted the G1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano on 6 occasions, the first of them in 1982 and repeating the experience in 1992, 1998, 2005, 2011 and 2020.
In the first of those races the victory went to the Brazilian horse DUPLEX, in 1992 the winner was the local POTRILLON; in 1998, another horse born in Brazil, JIMWAKI, won and in 2005 an Argentine won again: DON INCAUTO. The Peruvian BRADOCK won the 2011 edition and the local TETAZE was the winner in the year of the pandemic.
The grass track of the San Isidro Racecourse has the particularity of being very friendly for any horse, because of its layout and because of the lightness of its surface, presenting a single difficulty in the final stretch, where the competitors meet at the moment of greater effort with a steep slope. Although it is not at the level of Tattenham Corner, in Epsom, it does require saving energy to use in that section.
There is no one way of running that is favourable over the others. Yes, it is a rule that for a horse that uses very fast splits in front, it will be difficult to achieve the objective of winning.
When it rains, some tracks become firmer in a particular sector, but that does not happen with the grass track at San Isidro. It depends on the day, the amount of water that fell and the way it fell, which gives the surface random difficulties.
