Expert Column for Caulfield Cup (S2) (Brett Davis)

S2-1     Caulfield Cup
ZARDOZI was involved in a fascinating battle against LAND LEGEND in the recent G1 Metropolitan in Sydney but ultimately came off second best. The margin at the end between them was only slender but importantly the gap back to third was many significant lengths. Last year’s G1 VRC Oaks (Kennedy Oaks) winner is peaking perfectly for this coveted blue ribbon event but she’ll need a high mid-race speed to do her best. She’s one of many genuine winning chances in this year’s addition of the G1 Caulfield Cup, but if the rain arrives prior or during the event, which is highly anticipated, her chance is fully enhanced.

ELIYASS has only been in Australia for ten months but he’s trekking perfectly in the direction of the 2,400m G1 Caulfield Cup. The former European galloper has hardly put in a wrong step since arriving on Australian soil but draws poorly in barrier twenty one for this fascinating race. Jockey Tim Clarke has been the successful rider in all three of his Australian wins and they reunite following a courageous third in the recent G1 Turnbull Stakes. The 2,400m to this point remains untried but he’s well weighted and rock hard fit to handle the challenge.

LAND LEGEND was super impressive winning the G1 Metropolitan at Randwick last start after doing plenty wrong in the run whilst ferociously over racing. These are traits Zac Purton shall now have to deal with as he fly’s in from Hong Kong to specifically take the ride. There are no concerns with the 2400m, in fact a true staying contest is what he wants, so there may be an attempt to push up early and potentially lead. Whatever the case, he’s a high quality animal with a genuine winning chance and greater achievements are likely to follow.

BUCKAROO is in career best form and from a nice draw he’ll find cover whilst conserving energy throughout. The former French galloper picked up his first Australian G1 in the recent Underwood Stakes over 1,800m and he achieved it with a powerful turn of foot. With Joao Moreira once again booked to ride, plus a fair and reasonable weight to carry, only traffic congestion potentially appears an area of concern. Although, the elevated distance of 2,400m must be acknowledged and may come under notice as an area of doubt.

YOUNG WERTHER competed in this event back in 2021 and was not disgraced when beaten an honest seven lengths. Over the following years he’s gained plenty in physical maturity whilst contesting many high class G1 events. His recent performance in the G1 Turnbull Stakes was solid to the line and he’ll be greatly benefited today by the rise in trip. A career best performance is required if he’s to trouble all opponents for the win but he’s has been aimed towards this precise and particular event.

SELECTIONS: 13. ZARDOZI, 7. ELIYASS, 8. LAND LEGEND, 2. BUCKAROO & 9. YOUNG WERTHER
