Racing Incident Report
When asked about the improved performance of HONEST DRAGON compared with its last run at Happy Valley on 9 May 2001 over the same distance in a similar class race, Mr L Ho, Trainer, said at its last start the stable was confident of success with the horse and were very disappointed with its run. He said going into that race the horse had done well as it has done before tonight's race. He did say after the last run the owner had insisted that a claiming Apprentice be used to reduce the weight to be carried by the horse and the instructions given to Apprentice S K Sit tonight were identical to those given to E Legrix the previous run. Mr Ho said the better draw for HONEST DRAGON tonight in his opinion clearly was an important factor in the success and although SIR GALWAY raced outside HONEST DRAGON as it had done last time they met, HONEST DRAGON did seem to enjoy a more comfortable lead in front tonight. Mr Ho said he himself had not supported the horse, there had been moderate support for tonight from the owner, but there was not a great deal of confidence as the pervious run had been so bad. On this occasion it was decided the explanations submitted by Mr Ho would be recorded. He was told such form reversals are clearly not in the best interests of the sport and he should do all he can to ensure horses from his stable run at an acceptable degree of consistency. R Fradd (CHIRAG) said the intention had been to ride the horse somewhere forward of midfield in about 5th or 6th position if possible. He said however CHIRAG was a little slow to jump, then just after the start was crowded by THE BEST WINNER which shifted in. As a consequence of this, he got further back than planned, then rode along in an endeavour to go forward, but was unable to do so. He said CHIRAG travelled satisfactorily in a rearward position, but in the Back Straight appeared to lose its footing and stumbled when travelling behind BILLION DELIGHT and tight on the inside of HONG KONG STALLION. He went on to say after this incident he continued to follow BILLION DELIGHT but when he struck trouble near the 400 Metres he had to change course abruptly, but then CHIRAG did go to the line strongly. The explanations submitted by R Fradd were accepted. CHIRAG was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. An inquiry into the reason for BILLION DELIGHT being checked at about the 400 Metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
