Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, the Veterinary Surgeon noted blood in the mouth of SUPER COMBINATION. He said however there was no active bleeding and in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. KEWINS jumped awkwardly and threw its head about. EQUUS ZEPHYRUS left the gates awkwardly with its head up, shifted out abruptly and was then unbalanced when close to the heels of MR HONOUR. In the early and middle stages, LIGHTNING FAST pulled very hard, proved difficult to settle, about the 800 Metres was unbalanced when close to the heels of FORTUNE REACHING, shifted out and bumped SING SING SING. In the middle stages, EQUUS ZEPHYRUS hung out. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, FORTUNE REACHING hung out. About the 400 Metres, EVERWELL FOREVER was steadied when disappointed for running between EQUUS ZEPHYRUS and SOUNDS GOOD which shifted out to try and find running. About the 300 Metres, FORTUNE REACHING, which was starting to give some ground, was checked rather severely when crowded between LIGHTNING FAST and SING SING SING (E Saint-Martin) which in the opinion of the Stewards was hanging in. The checking to FORTUNE REACHING was made worse as a result of FORTUNE MAPLE endeavouring to shift out, this caused LIGHTNING FAST to shift ground, carried FORTUNE REACHING across the heels of SING SING SING. As a consequence, some inconvenience was caused to SOUNDS GOOD. Whilst the crowding was of some significance, the Stewards were satisfied E Saint-Martin had made necessary efforts to prevent it from occurring and accordingly no action was taken. When questioned, C Williams (JUMBO LUCK) said the intention from a good gate had been to be in about 4th or 5th position if possible. He said however after being boxed, JUMBO LUCK did become a little restless and he called for an assistant to ensure the horse was standing properly. He went on to say however just as the gates opened, JUMBO LUCK put its head down, as a consequence of this missed the start and got well out of its ground. He said in the Straight he felt he had no option but to continue improving along the rail. In the early part of the Straight, KEWINS shifted towards him, but when he appealed for room, that horse shifted out. He commenced to ride JUMBO LUCK along, but about the 200 Metres ran up behind MR HONOUR which had led and was stopping, he shifted out to avoid that horse and as a consequence of these incidents at no stage was JUMBO LUCK properly tested out. The explanations submitted by C Williams were accepted. G Mossé (GOLDEN BELL) said the horse has led 1200 Metre races, but recently has been ridden back and today the intention was to ride the horse back. He encouraged it to drop the bit and relax. He said the horse did relax in the run, but at no stage picked up the bridle and when put under pressure in the Straight failed to run on as expected. He was unable to put forward any real reason for the manner in which the horse performed in the race, but did say in his opinion the horse might have been feeling the hard ground. GOLDEN BELL was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, W Woods (EQUUS ZEPHYRUS) said on pulling up the horse was coughing. The Veterinary Surgeon examined EQUUS ZEPHYRUS. An endoscopic examination was conducted and this showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's windpipe.
