Racing Incident Report

WEALTHY TREASURE, which shifted the right front plate in the Parade Ring, was re-shod, examined by the Veterinary Officer and considered suitable to race. On jumping, GOODY was crowded for room between SAN LORENZO and INVERNESS. On jumping, EVER SUCCESS knuckled. TOM'S FIRST was very slow to begin. DASHING WINNER began awkwardly, got its head up and consequently lost ground. MARK OF EXCELLENCE was slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, BYRON was momentarily crowded for room inside SAMBUCA. In the early and middle stages, MONARDS hung out. After the 1000 Metres, MARK OF EXCELLENCE was steadied when crowded for room inside CELESTIAL STEEL. On straightening, GOODY was steadied and shifted in when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SAN LORENZO, then after the 400 Metres was again steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of BEARCAT which was giving ground. After the 400 Metres, DASHING WINNER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of MONARDS into clear running. Throughout the race, EVER SUCCESS raced in a forward position but wide without cover, then making the Home Turn hung out. When questioned regarding the poor performance of BEARCAT, F Coetzee, the horse's rider, said in his opinion it was solely attributable to today's wet track conditions. He did point out when previously racing on rain affected ground, BEARCAT had performed well, however, at no stage of today's race did BEARCAT travel as it should and in his opinion its action differed from when he had ridden it previously. BEARCAT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of BEARCAT after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of BEARCAT was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, BEARCAT will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MARK OF EXCELLENCE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, MARK OF EXCELLENCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MARK OF EXCELLENCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SAN LORENZO, WEALTHY TREASURE and SAMBUCA were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 6 April 2004)
BEARCAT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. BEARCAT was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz last Sunday. He said at this time the horse was found to be stiff all around. As previously advised, BEARCAT will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.
