Racing Incident Report

PRETTY TRIO was slow to begin. COSMO SUCCESS bounded in the air as the gates opened and lost ground. Then shortly afterwards, COSMO SUCCESS and DANRIVA were checked when crowded for room between TRAVEL LEADER which on jumping got its head on the side and shifted in and CLASSA VICTORY which shifted out. When being straightened to relieve the pressure it was applying to its inside, TRAVEL LEADER then shifted out, causing CITI CENTRE to be carried out, resulting in MILLENNIUM SPIRIT losing its rightful running and being checked. In the circumstances, no action was taken. CITI CENTRE raced in a forward position, but was three wide and without cover until near the 1000 Metres. At the 1000 Metres after being crossed by CITI CENTRE, TRAVEL LEADER proved difficult to settle, got its head up and shifted to the outside of CITI CENTRE into a three wide position. When this occurred, CLASSA VICTORY improved inside the heels of TRAVEL LEADER. Shortly afterwards, TRAVEL LEADER, which was continuing to prove difficult to settle, shifted in momentarily, causing crowding on its inside to CLASSA VICTORY and EARL GREY. Near the 800 Metres, BLACK KNIGHT got its head up. On straightening, COSMO SUCCESS was steadied and shifted to the outside of TRAVEL LEADER into clear running. Shortly after straightening when giving ground, TRAVEL LEADER shifted in and made contact with CLASSA VICTORY. When being straightened, TRAVEL LEADER then shifted out when not clear of COSMO SUCCESS, causing that horse to be hampered and steadied. At the 200 Metres, CLASSA VICTORY was again bumped by TRAVEL LEADER which shifted in. Over the concluding stages, EARL GREY raced close to the heels of COUNTRY BOY and because of this was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view that an incident had occurred over the concluding stages which cast sufficient doubt on whether DANRIVA should be declared the second placegetter in the race. M Zahra, the rider of PRETTY TRIO, third placegetter, also lodged two protests/objections, the first against DANRIVA (G Mossé) being declared the second placegetter alleging interference to his mount in the concluding stages, the second against COUNTRY BOY (F Coetzee) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount in the concluding stages. The Stewards formed the opinion that over the concluding stages PRETTY TRIO, which was closing the race off strongly, was crowded for room between COUNTRY BOY which held the straight line before being bumped on the hindquarters by PRETTY TRIO and DANRIVA which shifted in. Having formed this opinion, the Stewards considered PRETTY TRIO would have finished in front of DANRIVA had the crowding which clearly took place not occurred, further that COUNTRY BOY could not be held accountable to the crowding which occurred to PRETTY TRIO. Therefore the protest/objection third against first was overruled and the objection third against second was sustained and the Stewards placed DANRIVA immediately behind PRETTY TRIO [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became 1st COUNTRY BOY, 2nd PRETTY TRIO, 3rd DANRIVA, and 4th COSMO SUCCESS. At a subsequent inquiry, G Mossé was advised to exercise more care. CITI CENTRE, which performed poorly, was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CITI CENTRE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CITI CENTRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. COUNTRY BOY and DANRIVA were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted DANRIVA had sustained an injury to the left hind hoof.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 22 April 2004)
BLACK KNIGHT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer K W Lui this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, BLACK KNIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
