Racing Incident Report

WINFIELD was withdrawn on 26.2.04 on veterinary grounds (sore shin right fore limb) and was replaced by first Standby Declared Starter PRINCE GOLF. STRONG SUN was withdrawn on 27.2.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by second Standby Declared Starter EAST OCEAN DRAGON (R Fradd). Before being allowed to race again, WINFIELD and STRONG SUN will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, PRINCE GOLF was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. After being boxed, HAPPY PARTNERS became fractious and broke open the front gate of its stall. When the gates opened, SPRINTER blundered badly and lost ground. SANBENITO was slow to begin and was then steadied away from the heels of SUPER IDEAL which shifted in. At the 1400 Metres, INSIDE MAIL, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of HAPPY PARTNERS. At the same time, INSIDE MAIL shifted in. This caused some inconvenience to EAST OCEAN DRAGON. PRINCE GOLF travelled in a forward position, however, was three wide and without cover. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, EAST OCEAN DRAGON was held up and unable to improve when racing behind PRINCE GOLF and inside the heels of INSIDE MAIL. Over about the final 200 Metres, SERIOUS PLAY and SANBENITO were held up and unable to obtain clear running and consequently were not tested. In the Straight, COMME D'HABITUDE got its head on the side and hung out. Apprentice M W Leung (DIAMOND MOON) explained he had been told the horse can over-race, therefore he should endeavour to settle the horse near the rear and then in the Straight he was to try to improve towards the inside. He said DIAMOND MOON began well, he immediately took hold of it and eased it back to a position where he was able to cross to the rail. He said the only opportunity available to him was to shift across behind SANBENITO and race at the rear. He said near the 1000 Metres he considered improving his position to be on the back of SANBENITO, however, at that time GOOD HEART which was racing forward of him and to his outside momentarily shifted in, he therefore elected to remain racing behind that horse. He said in the middle stages DIAMOND MOON hung out and after the 600 Metres he slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip in his left hand. He said at that time SERIOUS PLAY which was racing two horses ahead of him on the rail brushed the running rail for some distance. He said because of this he was reluctant to improve his position after the 600 Metres. He said on straightening he commenced to ride DIAMOND MOON along hands and heels, when it became apparent that he would not be able to obtain running towards the inside as instructed, he commenced to shift out and near the 200 Metres shifted to the outside of EAST OCEAN DRAGON. He said he continued to ride DIAMOND MOON which was making nice ground along hands and heels, near the 150 Metres pulled the whip on the horse, then near the 100 Metres steadied and shifted to the outside of INSIDE MAIL to avoid that horse's heels. He said he then again rode DIAMOND MOON out with the whip over the concluding stages and the horse finished strongly. Before concluding, the Stewards wish to speak with Mr S Woods, trainer of DIAMOND MOON, and as he had left the course, it was decided to adjourn this matter until before the running of Race 1 at the Happy Valley race meeting next Wednesday 3 March 2004. HAPPY PARTNERS, SUPER IDEAL and EAST OCEAN DRAGON were sent for sampling.
