Racing Incident Report

SPLIT SECONDS, which was to be ridden quietly today, got its head up when being steadied after the start. RUN AND WIN, which was also to be ridden in a rearward position today, was steadied shortly after the start when crowded for room between SNIPPETYIYEA and HOLY QUEST. CORAJOSO began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SNIPPETYIYEA. In the early and middle stages, SPLIT SECONDS proved difficult to settle, in the Back Straight got its head up, hung out and raced tight with CORAJOSO, then making the turn at the 700 Metres became badly unbalanced and was checked. Prior to straightening, FORTUNE BOY was steadied away from the heels of CORAJOSO. Near the 300 Metres, SUGAR AND SPICE fell as a result of having broken down. RUN AND WIN, which was following, became badly unbalanced and almost dislodged M Zahra, its rider, when attempting to jump the fallen horse. SNIPPETYIYEA, which was also following, was checked severely and shifted out to avoid the fallen horse. After this, RUN AND WIN was not ridden out for the remainder of the race. After the race, Apprentice C K Tong, the rider of SUGAR AND SPICE, was examined by the Club's doctor who said in his opinion Apprentice Tong was suitable to fulfil his remaining riding engagements. Also near the 300 Metres, MODERN PROSPECT became unbalanced when bumped by SPLIT SECONDS which at this time shifted to the outside of SMART HORSE. W M Lai (HOLY QUEST) explained he had been instructed to lead if possible on the horse, otherwise to take up a forward position. He said he went forward on HOLY QUEST in the early stages and near the 1200 Metres he attempted to shift across to race towards the outside of SHINING DRAGON, however, when he did this, he noted SHINING DRAGON being restrained in an attempt to steady the pace. He said at this time HOLY QUEST got its head up and proved difficult to settle, he therefore elected to allow the horse to stride forward in the hope of being able to cross SHINING DRAGON and race on the fence in the lead, however, when he went forward, SHINING DRAGON commenced to over-race and held its position towards his inside with him being unable to clear that horse. He said after entering the Back Straight he again attempted to steady HOLY QUEST as he felt the pace at this stage was too quick, however, HOLY QUEST would not respond and over-raced. W Woods (SHINING DRAGON) said after making some use of the horse in the early stages to obtain the lead, he then near the 1200 Metres attempted to steady the tempo. He said when HOLY QUEST shifted across to race on his outside, SHINING DRAGON immediately commenced to over-race and despite his effort to have the horse come back to allow HOLY QUEST to go forward, he was not able to do so and as a consequence this section of the race was run at a fast pace. The explanations submitted by W M Lai and W Woods were accepted. CORAJOSO, MODERN PROSPECT and SPLIT SECONDS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported THISTLEJADE had bled from both nostrils and RUN AND WIN had sustained a laceration to the left hind cannon.
